A Step Towards Net-Zero Carbon Footprint
Deputy Chief Minister KV Singh Deo highlighted that this initiative aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a net-zero carbon footprint in the coming years. He emphasized that the agreement would contribute to innovative green energy solutions, focusing on revolutionizing public transport.
Details of the MoU
The MoU will be valid for five years, with NTPC responsible for hydrogen production, GRIDCO ensuring renewable energy supply, and CRUT managing the hydrogen-powered buses' operations.
Government's Green Hydrogen Mission
Under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has issued guidelines for implementing pilot projects. The project, with an investment of ₹19.5 crore by the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), aims to replace fossil fuel-based buses with eco-friendly hydrogen-powered ones.
Benefits of Hydrogen buses
Hydrogen buses offer several key benefits for India’s transport sector. Firstly, they produce zero emissions, which directly reduces air pollution and contributing to cleaner cities. With hydrogen being a renewable energy source, these buses help decrease reliance on fossil fuels, promoting energy independence.
Hydrogen buses also have a longer range compared to electric buses, making them ideal for long-distance travel. Additionally, they can be quickly refueled, offering more operational flexibility.
