Key Highlights:
The Uttar Pradesh government has announced that air-conditioned double-decker electric buses will soon run between Lucknow and five major cities. Set to start in the next three months, these new buses aim to provide passengers with a more comfortable and affordable travel option.
20 AC Double-Decker Electric Buses in First Phase
The Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC) will procure 20 double-decker electric buses in the first phase. Tenders have already been floated to initiate the purchase, marking a big step forward in the state’s commitment to upgrading its transport infrastructure.
UPSRTC Managing Director Masoom Ali Sarwar expressed optimism, stating, “With the arrival of these buses, the journey of passengers will become easier and fares will be lower compared to other buses.”
Specifications and Features
The buses are equipped with 65 seats, providing more capacity than the standard 52-seater buses currently in the fleet. With a single charge, each bus can run a distance of 150 to 200 kilometers, ensuring a reliable and long-range travel experience.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath recently inaugurated the first AC double-decker electric bus, which currently operates within Lucknow, running between the Kamta bus stand and Amausi.
Routes and Coverage: Connecting Major Cities
These AC double-decker electric buses will connect Lucknow with Ayodhya, Varanasi, Kanpur, Prayagraj, and Gorakhpur. Four buses will be dedicated to each of these five routes. This service is expected to improve connectivity and offer an affordable travel option, as each of these buses is designed to carry more passengers at lower fares compared to ordinary buses.
Infrastructure: Setting Up Charging Stations
To support the smooth functioning of these electric buses, 12 charging stations will be installed along the selected routes. Each station will be managed by different companies to maintain uninterrupted service.
UPSRTC officials have stated that tenders for these charging stations will be issued soon, ensuring the necessary infrastructure is in place by the time the buses are ready to operate.
Interest from Major Companies
Several major manufacturers, including Ashok Leyland, have shown interest in supplying the AC double-decker electric buses for the project. This involvement of well-known companies adds credibility to the initiative, as they bring experience and reliability in producing quality electric buses.
Expanding the Fleet with Electric Buses
At present, the UPSRTC fleet includes around 12,000 buses, of which 3,000 are contracted buses while the rest are state-owned. This project will mark the first inclusion of double-decker buses in the fleet, adding to the variety and capability of UPSRTC’s offerings. By focusing on electric buses, the state is also stepping toward more sustainable transport solutions, reducing pollution and fuel dependency.
