India to launch subsidy guidelines for electric ambulances by year-end under PM E-Drive, with ₹500 crore support and first models expected by early 2026.
Government to Announce Subsidy Guidelines for Electric Ambulances by Year-End

Key Highlights:

  • The government will bring in subsidy rules for electric ambulances by the end of this year.
  • ₹500 crore funding is focused only on pushing electric ambulances in India.
  • Force Motors is the first to get an electric ambulance approved.
  • First electric ambulances might hit the roads in early 2026 if things go as planned.
  • The Health and Transport ministries are working on safety and patient-related rules.

The Indian government is preparing to roll out detailed guidelines for subsidies on electric ambulances under the PM E-Drive scheme. The move is expected to encourage faster adoption of electric vehicles in the emergency medical services sector. As per senior officials, the guidelines will be issued by December 2025, with subsidies likely to be made available from early 2026.

₹500 Crore Allocated for Electric Ambulance Push

Electric ambulances have officially been included under the ₹10,900-crore PM E-Drive scheme. Out of the total budget, ₹500 crore has been specifically set aside to support the making and buying of electric ambulances in India. However, the exact amount of subsidy each vehicle will get and the terms of eligibility have not yet been announced.

Guidelines Under Formulation with Input from Key Ministries

The government is actively consulting with both the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Road Transport to prepare guidelines that ensure both patient safety and vehicle standards. These guidelines will outline essential parameters such as onboard medical equipment, cabin design, and road safety features.

PM E-Drive Scheme

The PM E-Drive scheme, which started on October 1, 2024, is the government’s flagship plan to support electric mobility in India. The PM E-Drive scheme has now become the main support system for electric vehicles, taking the place of older programs like FAME and EMPS, which were earlier running the show.

The scheme is currently set to run until March 31, 2026, unless extended. It includes two major funding components:

  1. ₹3,679 crore has been set aside to give buyers a price cut on electric two-wheelers, electric three-wheelers, electric trucks, and electric ambulances.
  2. ₹7,171 crore for electric buses, public charging stations, and improvements in vehicle testing infrastructure

E-Ambulance and Charging Guidelines

While subsidies for two- and three-wheelers, and buses are already operational, guidelines for electric trucks were just released. However, electric ambulances and charging infrastructure are still waiting for clear regulatory frameworks. The Ministry of Power is currently working on a nationwide plan for public charging infrastructure, which will include EVs of all categories, including ambulances.

OEMs Ready to Enter the Market

Force Motors, which is among India’s key ambulance makers, has homologated an electric ambulance, though its commercial launch is still pending. Tata Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra, also major players in the ambulance segment, are said to be working on their electric models as well.

Subsidies Will Lower Upfront Costs

Industry experts believe that providing subsidies for electric ambulances will significantly reduce their high initial cost, which is one of the biggest barriers to adoption. As the vehicle segment is new and specialised, initial production costs are high. Incentives will help bridge that gap and make these ambulances a more viable choice for hospitals and emergency service providers.

What’s Next?

By early 2026, hospitals, state health departments, and private ambulance services might finally get price relief when buying electric ambulances, thanks to the upcoming support under the PM E-Drive scheme. The upcoming guidelines will provide the final clarity the industry needs to kick off commercial rollouts and large-scale adoption. With government backing, India’s emergency medical services could soon become cleaner, quieter, and more sustainable.

CMV360 Says

Bringing electric ambulances under subsidy is a good thing. These vehicles are expensive, so without support, no one would buy them. With a subsidy, hospitals and state services can afford them. It’ll help reduce pollution and fuel costs too. Now the government needs to make the rules simple and not delay them any further.
