The central government has launched the "Khet Bachao Abhiyan" to address declining soil health due to excessive chemical fertilizer and pesticide use. The campaign began in Ramsiya village, Raisen district, Madhya Pradesh, led by Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan. The initiative aims to protect soil, strengthen agriculture, and reduce farming costs. The campaign will run across India from June 1 to June 30, 2026.
Many farmers use more urea and chemical fertilizers than needed, hoping for better yields. Initially, this practice can increase production. Over time, however, soil fertility drops, requiring higher fertilizer use each year and raising farming expenses. Experts note that excessive chemicals harm soil fertility and beneficial microorganisms. The government urges farmers to test their soil before applying fertilizers. Using fertilizers based on soil test results can keep fields healthy and improve crop quality.
Teams of agricultural scientists, university experts, Krishi Vigyan Kendras, and agriculture department officials will visit villages. They will interact directly with farmers, providing information on soil health cards, natural farming, balanced nutrient management, water conservation, modern sowing techniques, and new agricultural technologies. The campaign will also raise awareness about the dangers of fake fertilizers and pesticides.
The initiative extends beyond farming. The government plans to connect rural women with self-help groups, creating opportunities for self-employment and increased income. Activities for youth will focus on skill development, training, and employment to promote self-reliance in villages.
The Khet Bachao Abhiyan aims to guide farmers toward higher yields at lower costs. If farmers adopt soil testing, unnecessary fertilizer use will decrease, soil health will improve, and crop production may rise. The government’s goal is to secure fertile land for future generations, not just improve current farming.

Weeds remain a major challenge for small farmers across India. They compete with crops for nutrients, water, sunlight, and space. If not controlled in time, weeds can significantly reduce crop yields. Herbicides offer a quick solution, but rising input costs and environmental concerns have made weed management more complex.
The Mahindra 585 DI is a popular choice among Indian farmers in the 50 HP tractor category. It is suitable for fieldwork, operating rotavators, transporting loads, and cultivation tasks. The tractor is designed to meet the diverse needs of Indian agriculture.
