Gangamai partners with Mahindra to launch AI-based sugarcane harvesting in Maharashtra, improving yield, efficiency, and farmer benefits.
By Robin Kumar Attri
Key Highlights:
Maharashtra’s first AI-based private sugar mill is harvesting.
8.80 lakh metric tons of sugarcane were crushed this season.
Over 10% sugar recovery achieved.
AI predicts sugar levels with 95% accuracy.
1,500 farms monitored for pests and water stress.
Gangamai Sugar Mill, in partnership with Mahindra & Mahindra, has become the first private sugar mill in Maharashtra to adopt advanced AI and satellite-based technology for sugarcane harvesting. This partnership marks a major step towards transforming the sugarcane farming industry through smart, tech-driven solutions.

The new system uses Mahindra’s satellite imaging and AI tools to monitor sugarcane fields more effectively. Multispectral satellite data is collected to check the vegetation health of crops. This data, combined with weather information, is processed by an AI model to predict sugar recovery rates with up to 95% accuracy.
Gangamai has also set up a process to verify the AI’s predictions in its lab every week. This helps plan harvesting at the right time, leading to better sugar output.
AI-Based Harvest Planning: Maharashtra's first AI-driven sugarcane harvesting initiative by a private sugar mill.
Total Crushing: 8,80,975 metric tons of sugarcane were processed.
Sugar Recovery: Over 10% sugar recovery rate, an improvement over last year.
Pest and Disease Alerts: Satellite-based early warnings were provided to farmers for better crop management.
The technology has already made a positive impact on farming operations:
Increased sugar recovery and reduced harvesting costs
Continuous monitoring of over 1,500 farmer's fields
Early detection of pests and water stress allows farmers to take quick action
Improved crop yields and better planning for Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) payments
To support farmers further, Gangamai Industries has conducted awareness programs. These sessions help farmers understand how to use technology for better harvesting and income.
Mahindra & Mahindra has played a key role in developing and applying this innovative system. The company has been working with sugar mills for more than four years and is the first in India to implement AI-based harvesting methods.
Their use of precision farming tools like satellite imaging and spectrometry allows them to track how much sugar is present in sugarcane crops. AI algorithms analyze the photosynthesis levels in crop leaves, helping identify the best time to harvest for maximum sugar output.
This technology boosts sugar yield and directly helps farmers earn more from their harvest.
This collaboration between Gangamai Industries and Mahindra highlights the power of combining traditional farming with modern technology. By using AI and satellite tools, sugarcane farming is becoming more productive, cost-effective, and profitable for farmers across Maharashtra.
