As per the new circular from NPCI, FASTag users should always ensure their account has sufficient balance.
FASTag new rules: Key changes and implications you need to know

Key Highlights:

  • New rules for FASTag balance validation are now in effect to improve toll transactions.
  • Blacklisted FASTags will not process payments at toll gates.
  • Users have a 70-minute grace period to resolve blacklisting issues before passing through.
  • Blacklisted FASTags will lead to double toll charges unless recharged within 10 minutes.
  • Banks can initiate chargebacks after 15 days for incorrect deductions related to FASTags.

New FASTag balance validation rules are now in effect. These changes are designed to make toll transactions smoother and reduce fraud, which will directly decrease waiting times at toll gates. According to a circular from the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), users who don't follow these rules may face double the toll charges.

New FASTag Rules in India

  • If a FASTag is blacklisted when reaching the toll, the payment will not be processed.
  • If the FASTag was blacklisted at least 10 minutes before the scan, the payment will be declined.
  • Users will have a 70-minute grace period to fix the status of their FASTag before passing through the toll.
  • Users with a blacklisted FASTag will have to pay double the toll charges when they reach the booth. However, if they are aware of the blacklisting and recharge within 10 minutes, a penalty refund will be processed to return the extra charge.
  • If the transaction is processed more than 15 minutes after the vehicle passes through the scanner, users may face additional charges.
  • Banks are allowed to initiate chargebacks for incorrect deductions related to blacklisted or low-balance FASTags after a 15-day waiting period.

FASTags can get blacklisted for the following reasons:

  • Insufficient balance
  • Failure in payment
  • Non-payment of toll tax
  • Failure to update Know Your Customer (KYC) details
  • Discrepancy in the vehicle's registration or chassis number during scanning

As per the new circular from NPCI, FASTag users should always ensure their account has sufficient balance. Users are also advised to check their balance before entering a toll booth. Additionally, it's important to verify the FASTag status to ensure the account is active and hasn't been blacklisted.

The new FASTag rules aim to make toll payments faster and reduce delays. Users need to make sure their account has enough balance and that their FASTag isn't blacklisted. If the FASTag is blacklisted, users could face double charges unless they fix it quickly. The 70-minute grace period allows time to resolve issues, but it's still important to check the status before reaching the toll gate to avoid extra costs. Staying aware of these new FASTag rules in India can avoid unexpected problems during travel.
