Key Highlights:
EKA (Pinnacle Mobility Solutions Pvt. Ltd.) is preparing to introduce new electric bus models and small commercial vehicles (SCVs) next year. This announcement was made by Vinay Nidige, Head of EKA’s private bus sales unit, during the Prawaas 4.0 event.
Expansion Plans
EKA, an electric commercial vehicle startup funded by Mitsui & Co., Ltd and VDL Groep, announced that it will include 7- and 13.5-meter buses to its existing range of 9- and 12-meter models.
Nidige expressed that the company is preparing to introduce a broad product range in the electric bus market, highlighting the companies ambition to expand its market share.
Nidige sees enormous opportunity in the bus industry, which has previously been dominated by private players. While government orders have primarily fueled demand for electric buses in urban areas, he believes that the private sector will increasingly use electric coaches for transportation.
Nidige mentioned that the company is set to enter the 13.5-meter coach platform, expected to be ready by the first quarter of next year, signaling a strategic move by EKA to explore new revenue opportunities.
Partnerships and Investments
The company's collaboration with Mitsui and VDL Groep includes a joint investment of more than USD 100 million (about Rs 850 crores) spread over several years.
Mitsui will give financial and strategic assistance for EKA's aspirations in selected emerging countries. Meanwhile, VDL Groep, known for its leadership in electric buses and coaches through Dutch subsidiary VDL Bus & Coach, will transfer cutting-edge technology to EKA, allowing for local production of modern electric buses customized to Indian market demands.
The company emphasized that the aforementioned collaborations will be critical in improving EKA's capabilities, not just in manufacturing but also in building solid systems and procedures required for scaling up operations.
Focus on the SCV Segment
The company plans to grow into the three-wheeler segment by building on its present offering, a 1.5-tonne truck. The new series will offer both passenger and cargo models with a variety of seating and payload combinations to meet the different market needs.
