In a significant move to enhance last-mile connectivity in Delhi, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is set to expand its fleet of electric three-wheelers.
An official has revealed that over 1,100 new e-autos will be added to their current fleet. The Transport Department granted the DMRC 2,299 e-auto permits, of which 1,183 have been registered.
These e-autos operate out of approximately 40 DMRC stations. The electric vehicles have charging stations and designated parking spaces.
According to a DMRC spokesperson, an additional 1,116 e-autos, including 779 general and 337 women-specific vehicles, are expected to be registered by the end of August.
These e-auto permits have been issued to licensed operators at metro stations in Chhatarpur, Dwarka, Rohini, and northwest Delhi. Vikas Kumar, Managing Director of DMRC, stated that providing last-mile connectivity for commuters remains a top goal for the Delhi Metro.
Kumar also praised the Delhi government's initiative to improve last-mile connectivity through a bus service.
Kumar stated that the e-auto service may not be feasible for all metro stations due to the size of the vehicles. Meanwhile, e-autos are highly maneuverable, he continued.
Partnerships for E-Auto Operations
Kumar highlighted that DMRC is partnering with companies that will provide and operate the e-autos according to DMRC’s requirements. These e-autos will run on specific circuits to ensure seamless last-mile connectivity.
