DICV to introduce an eCanter electric truck, aiming to end diesel dominance. Sustainable, efficient, and paving the way for India's green future.
By Robin Kumar Attri

Daimler India Commercial Vehicles (DICV) is gearing up to revolutionize the Indian truck market with the introduction of its all-electric eCanter light-duty truck within the next 6 to 12 months. This bold move by DICV underscores its commitment to environmental sustainability and aligns with Daimler Truck's global vision to significantly reduce carbon emissions.
DICV is on a mission to change its entire product portfolio towards carbon-neutral technologies in the long term. The launch of the eCanter represents the first step towards achieving this ambitious goal. With plans to make all trucks and buses CO2-neutral by 2039 in key markets like Europe, Japan, and the USA, and globally by 2050, DICV is setting a high standard for sustainability in the automotive industry.
Satyakam Arya, the Managing Director and CEO of DICV emphasized the company's dedication to sustainable practices. He stated, "All our efforts are being put into achieving robust readiness for our future products that will feature CO2-neutral propulsion technologies in the long term. The launch of the all-electric eCanter in India, within the next 6 to 12 months, is the first step in our long-term strategy to decarbonize our entire product portfolio."
Despite the rapid advancement of electric vehicle technology, Arya acknowledges that diesel trucks will continue to play a significant role in the Indian market for the foreseeable future. Factors such as the availability of charging and refueling infrastructure, the accessibility of green energy sources, and cost equality will influence the coexistence of diesel and electric trucks in the market.
DICV's change to carbon-neutral technologies is possible due to various external factors. These include the development of infrastructure for charging and refueling, the widespread availability of green energy, and the acceptance of electric vehicles among customers. In light of these considerations, DICV's initial focus with the eCanter is to ensure product excellence and customer satisfaction.

DICV has already embarked on innovative projects, including the development of a BharatBenz hydrogen fuel cell concept coach in collaboration with a major Indian conglomerate. Looking ahead, the company plans to introduce electric trucks tailored to different utility segments, serving purposes such as long haul, mining, construction, and petroleum, oil, and lubricants (POL) transportation. Arya emphasized, "LNG if used at all, will be an interim, tactical solution for long haul transportation. We will primarily commit to battery-electric and hydrogen-based propulsion technologies across our future product portfolio, in a phased manner."
The all-electric eCanter for the Indian market is currently undergoing advanced trials. Originating in Japan, where the series production of the first-generation eCanter began in 2017, this next-generation model promises enhanced performance and versatility. Since its launch, the eCanter has gathered significant interest in markets across Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and Hong Kong, with hundreds of units sold. The upcoming model is expected to offer even more variants, catering to diverse customer needs and preferences.

By introducing electric trucks like the eCanter, DICV aims to lead the way towards a more sustainable future, benefiting both the environment and the economy. With innovation and determination, DICV is assured to reshape the landscape of transportation in India and beyond.
