Key Highlights:
Daimler India Commercial Vehicles (DICV) has made its Oragadam manufacturing facility near Chennai run entirely on renewable energy. This move cuts down 22,970 tons of carbon emissions every year, reaching its goal ahead of the planned 2025 deadline.
DICV Managing Director, Satyakam Arya, credited government policies, especially those supporting green power purchases, for making this shift possible. The company has been growing its renewable energy setup since 2018.
The change uses both solar power generated on-site and renewable energy bought from outside sources. The facility's solar plant, with 15,000 panels, has a peak capacity of 4,300 kW. The plant provides 17% of the power needed and reducing carbon emissions by 4,000 tons annually.
This move comes at a time when vehicle manufacturers around the world are under pressure to lower their carbon emissions. The Indian government aims for a 50% renewable energy mix by 2030, with large industries expected to take the lead in this change.
Daimler Truck AG, DICV’s parent company, has committed to producing carbon-neutral vehicles across all its global operations. The Chennai facility, which produces commercial vehicles for both the Indian and export markets, is one of the company’s major production hubs in Asia.
The company is exploring more ways to improve energy efficiency and find alternative renewable energy sources to reduce its environmental impact. The Oragadam facility is main in making BharatBenz trucks and buses, along with Mercedes-Benz coaches.
Carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) is the measurement standard used by DICV. It includes all greenhouse gases and converts them into the equivalent impact of CO2, giving a complete picture of environmental impact.
