Cummins Collaborates with Bosch and KPIT for Open-Source Telematics Project in Commercial Vehicles

Key Highlights:

  • Cummins Inc. partners with Bosch Global Software and KPIT to launch Eclipse CANought for commercial vehicle telematics.
  • The project aims to reduce costs for developing telematics applications in commercial vehicles.
  • Eclipse CANought simplifies over-the-air updates by standardizing access to the CAN bus.
  • The open-source model accelerates innovation in software-defined vehicles.
  • Telematics offerings using Eclipse CANought will launch in 2025.

Cummins Inc has announced a partnership with Bosch Global Software and India’s KPIT Technologies to launch a new open-source project called Eclipse CANought. This project is part of the Eclipse Software Defined Vehicle (SDV) initiative and aims to lower the development costs for telematics applications in commercial vehicles.

Key Industry Partners

Brad Sutton, Executive Director of Powertrain Engineering at Cummins Inc., highlighted the expertise of both Bosch and KPIT in vehicle telematics. Sutton emphasized that their combined knowledge will allow them to develop innovative solutions more quickly, providing value to customers in the commercial vehicle sector.

Open-Source Innovation

Eclipse CANought will focus on improving access to the CAN (Controller Area Network) bus, which acts as the communication system between various electronic components in a vehicle. The goal is to standardize and secure this access, making it easier to integrate features such as over-the-air software updates.

Mike Milinkovich, Executive Director at the Eclipse Foundation, described the project as a significant step in merging open-source collaboration with established industry standards like CAN and SAE J1939. This will accelerate the development of software-defined vehicle applications.

Improving Telematics Solutions

Eclipse CANought will complement another project, Eclipse Kanto, which allows containerized applications to run on different telematics hardware. Bosch’s Pracheth Rao and ETAS’ Sven Kappel both emphasized the importance of secure, coordinated software updates, especially as countries enforce stricter cybersecurity regulations.

Contributions to Continue

The collaboration between Cummins, Bosch, ETAS, and KPIT will evolve over the coming months, with ongoing contributions to the Eclipse CANought project. These contributions will be further refined by the Eclipse SDV community to ensure they are ready for market production.

Anup Sable, CTO of KPIT Technologies, expressed pride in their longstanding partnership with Cummins and praised the potential impact of this new open-source project on the commercial vehicle industry.

Expected Market Launch

Both Eclipse CANought and Eclipse Kanto are expected to be included in telematics offerings beginning in 2025.
