Ashok Leyland Partners with Nidec to Develop Advanced e-Drive Motors for Commercial Vehicles

Ashok Leyland, a leading commercial vehicle manufacturer in India, has entered into a partnership with Japan-based Nidec Motor Corporation to develop advanced electric drive systems. Nidec Motor Corporation is a 100%-owned subsidiary of Nidec Corporation and a global manufacturer of electric motor drives situated in Japan.

Ashok Leyland and Nidec will collaborate to create a Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Electric Drive Units. This CoE will work on developing motor technologies and power electronics systems for electric vehicles, as well as advancements in gear-shifting methods. 

The relationship will also include combined research and development activities, with both firms contributing to skilling, lab infrastructure, and the definition of unique, differentiated motor technologies for Ashok Leyland's EV range and its subsidiary, Switch Mobility.

Ashok Leyland's Managing Director and CEO, Shenu Agarwal, stated, "This collaboration allows us to co-develop innovative e-drive motors, specifically designed for the unique demands of India's commercial vehicle market, while significantly advancing our electric mobility capabilities. By merging our strengths, we hope to develop cutting-edge solutions that will set new standards and drive the future of sustainable commercial transportation in India."

Michael Briggs, President of Nidec Motion and Energy, stated, "Nidec is well positioned in India and is an excellent fit for increasing commercial EV adoption. Our investment strategy and motor technology are fully supported by Ashok Leyland, which understands the precise and specialized needs of the commercial vehicle sector."

Ashok Leyland will continue to use Nidec motors in its current electric vehicle lineup, while also partnering on research and development for future electric solutions. 

This collaboration demonstrates both companies' shared goal of innovating and designing e-drives that satisfy the diverse terrains and operating requirements of India's commercial vehicle market. Furthermore, the alliance intends to establish a robust local supply chain for next-generation electric vehicles in India.
