Ashok Leyland is focusing on electric, LNG, and hydrogen trucks to support cleaner and greener transportation in India.
Ashok Leyland Accelerates Shift Towards Alternative Fuels, Focuses on Electric, LNG, and Hydrogen Trucks

Key Highlights:

  • Ashok Leyland is focusing on battery electric, LNG, and hydrogen-powered vehicles as part of its alternative fuel strategy.
  • Electric and LNG vehicles are expected to be adopted faster due to better infrastructure and readiness.
  • The company claims to operate the world’s largest fleet of hydrogen trucks with a customer partner.
  • Ashok Leyland is expanding its electric truck range, including a new 55-tonne battery-electric tractor-trailer.
  • Switch Mobility, its EV subsidiary, reported strong performance with double-digit EBITDA in Q4 FY25.

Ashok Leyland Ltd is increasing its focus on alternative fuels for its vehicles. The company is working on multiple clean fuel options like battery electric vehicles (EVs), liquefied natural gas (LNG), and hydrogen-powered trucks. “We are working on all kinds of alternative fuels,” said Shenu Agarwal, Managing Director & CEO of Ashok Leyland. He also mentioned that the company has different plans for each fuel based on when they expect it to be widely adopted in India or globally.

Electric and LNG Trucks to Come First

According to Agarwal, battery electric and LNG vehicles are likely to be adopted faster than hydrogen ones due to better infrastructure and readiness. Even though hydrogen may take longer to become mainstream, Ashok Leyland is already ahead in this segment. The company currently has the largest fleet of hydrogen trucks in the world, operating with a customer partner, though the customer’s name was not shared.

New LNG Products Coming Soon

Ashok Leyland is making significant progress in manufacturing LNG-powered trucks. Some models are already available, and more are expected to be launched by the end of FY26. Ashok Leyland Ltd is India’s second-largest commercial vehicle maker.

The company already has a wide range of electric trucks across different weight classes. From Switch electric vehicles in the 2–3.5-tonne range to the BOSS electric truck (14–19 tonnes), and now a new 55-tonne electric tractor-trailer, Ashok Leyland is expanding its EV portfolio.

Switch Mobility Leading the EV Charge

Switch Mobility, Ashok Leyland’s EV arm, is leading efforts in the electric segment. The company has launched electric LCVs and buses in India and overseas. The company reported strong financial performance, with double-digit EBITDA in Q4 FY25 and break-even for the full year. Agarwal confirmed that the company is actively working on all fronts of alternative fuels and is committed to future-ready transportation.

Ashok Leyland’s move towards electric, LNG, and hydrogen trucks makes sense right now. With fuel costs rising and more talk about clean transport, it's good to see a trusted brand working on options that could benefit both the environment and vehicle owners.
