PM Modi approves Rs 38,000 crore fertiliser subsidy for Rabi season.
Kharif 2025 shows strong sowing growth across paddy, pulses, and oilseeds.
Reservoir storage at 104% of last year’s level ensures adequate irrigation.
27% of Kharif crops harvested; early Rabi sowing begins.
The government aims to boost farmer income and sustainable agriculture.
Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for approving a Rs 38,000 crore fertiliser subsidy, calling it a major support for farmers ahead of the upcoming Rabi season. The decision was taken during a Cabinet meeting chaired by PM Modi and is expected to ensure a timely and affordable fertiliser supply across the country.
Shivraj Singh Chouhan said India’s agriculture sector is showing record progress this year, thanks to a favourable monsoon, strong government policies, and improved water resources. The subsidy will help farmers sustain high crop yields and maintain stability in input costs during the Rabi season.
During a review meeting on Kharif 2025 sowing progress, the minister said the season has been “highly satisfactory.”
Paddy has been sown on 441.58 lakh hectares, higher than last year.
Oilseeds cover 190.13 lakh hectares, led by soybean and groundnut crops.
Pulse cultivation reached 120.41 lakh hectares, contributing to India’s nutritional security.
Sugarcane has expanded to 59.07 lakh hectares this year.
Officials added that good rainfall and water availability have played a vital role in the improved agricultural performance.
Agriculture Commissioner Dr P.K. Singh informed that the total live storage in 161 reservoirs across the country stands at 165.58 billion cubic metres, which is 104% of last year’s level and 116% of the ten-year average. This ensures adequate irrigation for both ongoing Kharif harvesting and the upcoming Rabi crops.
Harvesting of Kharif crops has already started in several states, covering around 27% of the total sown area. Early Rabi sowing has also begun. The condition of onion, potato, and tomato crops remains stable. Moreover, central foodgrain stocks, particularly rice and wheat, are well above buffer norms, ensuring food security across the nation.
Chouhan said the government remains focused on achieving record agricultural milestones through favourable weather, digital innovations, and farmer-friendly policies. He added that the Centre will work with states to expand Rabi sowing of pulses and oilseeds to enhance productivity and farmer income.
“These achievements reflect the success of farmer-centric policies under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership,” Chouhan said, adding that the government is committed to sustainable growth and better livelihoods for India’s farming community.
