The Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), Pusa, New Delhi, has developed a new gram variety named Pusa Chana 4037 Ashwini. This variety is specially designed to give higher yields at lower costs, making it a profitable option for farmers. It has been notified for several northern states of India and is set to significantly benefit the gram cultivation.

This improved variety has been named "Ashwini" in memory of Dr. Ashwini, a talented scientist and former student of IARI, who sadly lost her life during the recent floods in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. The new gram variety stands as a tribute to her contributions and dedication.
Farmers in the following states can cultivate Pusa Chana 4037 Ashwini:

Western Uttar Pradesh
Jammu and Kashmir
Himachal Pradesh
Uttarakhand
High Yield:
Average yield: 2673 kg per hectare
Maximum yield: 3646 kg per hectare (approximately 36 quintals)
Disease Resistance:
Highly resistant to Fusarium wilt
Moderately resistant to dry root rot, collar rot, and stunt disease
High Protein Content:
Contains about 24.8% protein, making it a nutritious option
Machine Harvestable:
Suitable for harvesting with machines, helping farmers save time and labour

Best Soil:
Grows well in sandy and clayey soils
Avoid saline or salty soils
Ideal soil pH: Between 5.5 and 7
Sowing Time:
Rainfed areas: Between 10 October and 25 October
Irrigated areas: Between 25 October and 10 November
Spacing and Depth:
Distance between seeds: 10 cm
Distance between rows: 30–40 cm
Sowing depth: 10 to 12.8 cm
Fertilizer Application (Per Acre):
In low irrigation areas: 13 kg urea + 50 kg super phosphate
For chickpea varieties: 13 kg urea + 100 kg super phosphate at the time of sowing
