Under the Pradhan Mantri Gramin Awas Yojana (PMGAY), the Central Government is making significant strides in providing pucca houses (permanent homes) to rural families living in kutcha or semi-pucca dwellings. In a new development, 33,138 additional houses have been approved for construction in the second phase of the scheme, benefiting Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs) in Madhya Pradesh.

A Gift of Permanent Housing

The PMGAY-Rural initiative is part of a larger mission to ensure every family has a safe and permanent home. Families in backward tribal areas of Madhya Pradesh are being prioritized under the Pradhan Mantri Janjati Adivasi Nyay Maha Abhiyan (PM Jan-Man). This mission aims to improve the living standards of PVTG families and provide relief from the challenges of living in unsafe kutcha houses.

So far, the government has approved a total of 1,87,138 houses in Madhya Pradesh across two phases, covering 24 districts with significant PVTG populations. The initiative includes basic amenities like clean water, sanitation, and electricity in these new homes, ensuring a substantial improvement in living conditions.

Progress in the First Phase

In the first phase, the Union Rural Development Ministry approved 1,54,000 houses, with 1,44,200 homes targeted for completion by December 2024. The estimated cost of this phase is ₹2,884 crore. Out of this, over 36,720 houses have already been built and handed over to beneficiaries. The funds for construction were transferred directly to the beneficiaries' bank accounts in installments, ensuring transparency and efficient utilization.

Second Phase: 33,138 New Homes Approved

In the second phase, the government has approved 33,138 additional houses for 21 districts in Madhya Pradesh. Districts like Sheopur, Shivpuri, and Umaria have received the highest allocations, with thousands of families set to benefit. These homes are being built under strict guidelines set by the Union Rural Development Ministry, ensuring quality construction.

Beyond Housing: Comprehensive Development for Tribal Communities

This housing initiative is part of a broader effort under the PM PVTG Vikas Mission, launched in 2023 with an outlay of ₹15,000 crore. The mission aims to improve the socio-economic conditions of tribal families by providing access to education, healthcare, clean drinking water, and better infrastructure, including roads and telecom connectivity.

During the campaign, PVTG families will also receive essential documents such as Aadhaar Cards, Community Certificates, and Jan Dhan Accounts, enabling them to access additional government benefits like Ayushman Bharat Health Cards and PM Kisan Samman Nidhi.

Transforming Lives, One House at a Time

The government’s efforts are addressing the long-standing challenges faced by PVTG families, including isolation and lack of basic amenities. The construction of pucca houses not only provides a safe and stable living environment but also protects families from natural disasters and other risks. Electrification and access roads are also being developed to further enhance the quality of life in these tribal communities.

By December 2024, thousands of tribal families in Madhya Pradesh will move into their new homes, marking a significant step towards fulfilling the government’s vision of “Housing for All” and empowering the most vulnerable sections of society.
