The joint venture will focus on developing centralized high-performance control units for commercial vehicles, which will manage large amounts of data.
This initiative aims to improve safety, comfort, and efficiency in the commercial vehicle sector.

Key Highlights:

  • Volvo and Daimler signed a joint venture agreement for a software-defined vehicle (SDV) platform.
  • The platform will enhance vehicle safety, comfort, and efficiency.
  • SDV allows independent digital features and wireless updates.
  • The venture will be based in Gothenburg, Sweden.
  • The transaction is expected to complete by mid-2025, pending approvals.

In May 2024, Volvo Group and Daimler Truck announced their plans to create a joint venture. The goal is to develop a shared software-defined vehicle (SDV) platform and a dedicated truck operating system. Recently, both companies signed a binding agreement to establish this joint venture, which will be based in Gothenburg, Sweden.

Focus on Digital Vehicle Functions

This new software-defined vehicle platform will allow Volvo Group, Daimler Truck, and other potential customers to offer independent digital functions for their vehicles. This initiative aims to improve safety, comfort, and efficiency in the commercial vehicle sector.

Leadership Commitment

Karin Radström, CEO of Daimler Truck, emphasized the importance of this signing, stating, "This demonstrates our joint commitment to lead the digital transformation of our industry."

Martin Lundstedt, President and CEO of Volvo Group, noted that this collaboration aims to redefine software architecture and create a new era of self-optimizing trucks.

Future Development Plans

The joint venture will focus on developing centralized high-performance control units for commercial vehicles, which will manage large amounts of data.

The new company plans to create an operating system and tools that manufacturers can use to develop their unique digital vehicle features. This approach will allow for the separation of software and hardware development, enabling customers to update their digital applications wirelessly.

Continuing Competition

Despite this partnership, Volvo Group and Daimler Truck will continue to compete in the market. They will maintain distinct product and service offerings, including their digital solutions.

Timeline for Completion

The joint venture is expected to be finalized in the first half of 2025, pending regulatory approvals.
