The Central Government has approved fisheries development projects worth ₹353.01 crore in Telangana under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY). The projects are aimed at increasing fish production, improving fisheries infrastructure, strengthening storage and marketing facilities, and raising the income of fishermen and fish farmers.
The biggest project under this package is a modern wholesale fish market in Hyderabad, which will be developed at a cost of ₹47.03 crore. The market will include modern storage, cold-chain and logistics facilities to improve the handling and distribution of fish.
The information was provided by Union Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh (Lalan Singh) in a written reply to a question raised by Rajya Sabha MP K. Laxman.
Of the total ₹353.01 crore worth of approved projects, the Central Government's share will be ₹112.68 crore.
The approved package covers several areas, including modern fish farming systems, hatcheries, fish marketing centres, market infrastructure, livelihood support and advanced fisheries facilities. The projects will use modern technology to improve both fish production and marketing capacity across Telangana.
A high-tech wholesale fish market will be established in Hyderabad with an investment of ₹47.03 crore.
The market will have facilities such as:
Cold storage facilities
Cold-chain infrastructure
Better logistics and transportation
Modern fish storage and handling systems
Improved marketing facilities
The cold-chain network will help maintain fish quality during storage and transportation. The modern market is also expected to give fishermen and traders better access to organised markets while making fresh fish more easily available to consumers.
Another major initiative is the establishment of a Murrel Fish Cluster and Murrel Centre of Excellence in Mancherial district.
The facility will focus on scientific Murrel fish farming and will provide:
Advanced fish farming technology
Quality fish seed
Training facilities
Research support
These facilities are expected to improve scientific fish farming practices and help increase Murrel production in the state.
The fisheries infrastructure network in Telangana will also be expanded through several new facilities.
The approved projects include:
771 two-wheelers with ice boxes
341 three-wheelers
6 insulated vehicles
185 fish kiosks
2 live fish vending centres
These facilities will support safer fish transportation, better storage and improved retail sales. They will also help fishermen take their produce to better markets while reducing the chances of quality deterioration during transportation.
The fisheries development programme will create a large network of production and aquaculture facilities in Telangana.
Under the approved projects, the state will get:
21 freshwater fish hatcheries
823.68 hectares of grow-out ponds
759.86 hectares of aquaculture facilities
11 Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS) units
89 reservoir cage culture units
2 mini feed mills
These facilities are expected to increase fish seed availability, expand fish farming and introduce more modern production systems.
The projects also include direct livelihood support for traditional fishing communities.
Around 4,970 traditional fishermen will receive livelihood support, while 52 boats and fishing nets will also be distributed.
This assistance is intended to strengthen the earning capacity of traditional fishermen and provide them with better resources for fishing activities.
The National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB), Hyderabad is responsible for screening, approving and monitoring proposals received from states and Union Territories under PMMSY.
So far, the NFDB has conducted 389 training programmes, benefiting 15,565 fish farmers.
The training programmes are aimed at improving technical knowledge and helping fish farmers adopt modern and more productive fisheries practices.
The Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) is a flagship fisheries scheme of the Central Government. It is administered by the Department of Fisheries under the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying.
The scheme focuses on increasing fish production, developing modern fisheries infrastructure and improving the income of fishermen and fish farmers.
