Key Highlights:
Tata Motors, India's leading commercial vehicle manufacturer, launched its eighth Registered Vehicle Scrapping Facility (RVSF) in Kolkata, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable vehicle recycling. The state-of-the-art facility, named 'Re.Wi.Re — Recycle with Respect,' can process 21,000 end-of-life vehicles annually, catering to a wide range of vehicle types, including passenger cars, commercial vehicles, two-wheelers, and three-wheelers from all brands. Operated by Selladale Synergies India Pvt. Ltd., this marks Tata Motors' third Re.Wi.Re center in eastern India, enhancing access to eco-friendly vehicle disposal in the region.
The inauguration was led by Snehasis Chakraborty, West Bengal’s Transport Minister, who praised the initiative as a pivotal move toward a cleaner, more efficient future. He emphasized its role in encouraging the adoption of safer, energy-efficient vehicles and fostering a circular economy in the transport sector. Kolkata’s Mayor, Firhad Hakim, joined virtually, underscoring the facility’s environmental benefits and its potential to generate employment opportunities in the state.
Leadership Insights:
Rajesh Kaul, Vice President and Business Head of Trucks at Tata Motors Commercial Vehicles, highlighted the company’s vision for sustainable mobility. “The launch of West Bengal’s first Re.Wi.Re facility and our eighth nationwide is a milestone in building a robust vehicle scrapping ecosystem. With our eight RVSFs collectively capable of dismantling over 1.3 lakh vehicles annually, we are setting a benchmark for safety, compliance, and sustainability in India’s recycling landscape,” Kaul said.
The Kolkata facility is fully digitalized, featuring paperless operations and specialized stations for dismantling components like tyres, batteries, fuel, and oils, ensuring compliance with India’s vehicle scrappage policy. Its advanced processes prioritize environmental responsibility, safely handling materials to minimize ecological impact. The center’s capacity to process diverse vehicle categories makes it a one-stop solution for scrapping needs in the region.
Tata Motors’ broader Re.Wi.Re network includes facilities in Jaipur, Bhubaneswar, Surat, Chandigarh, Delhi NCR, Pune, and Guwahati. These centers collectively strengthen India’s efforts to modernize its vehicle fleet, reduce emissions, and promote resource recovery.
The Kolkata facility is expected to be critical in West Bengal’s environmental and economic landscape. By providing a structured scrapping process, it encourages vehicle owners to retire older, polluting vehicles in favor of newer, compliant models. Additionally, the initiative aligns with national policies to reduce vehicular pollution and improve road safety.
Local stakeholders, including transport associations and environmental groups, have welcomed the development, noting its potential to transform Kolkata’s approach to vehicle lifecycle management. As Tata Motors continues to expand its Re.Wi.Re the network, the company is poised to lead India’s transition toward a more sustainable automotive industry, balancing economic growth with environmental stewardship.
