Key Highlights

  • Battery swapping for LCVs and MCVs launching in 18-24 months.
  • 40% reduction in upfront costs for electric buses.
  • 3-minute battery swapping process.
  • Partnership with Veera Vahana for battery-swappable buses.
  • Nationwide expansion with IndianOil's 37,000 fuel stations.

Bengaluru-based SUN Mobility is gearing up to launch its battery-swapping technology for light and medium commercial vehicles (LCVs and MCVs) within the next 18 to 24 months. This cutting-edge technology was first introduced for heavy electric vehicles (HEVs) at Prawaas 4.0, an international bus and car operator’s conference.

The company's CEO of HEV, Ashok Agarwal, highlighted their focus on rolling out this technology across a wide range of applications. He said, “Our primary focus will be to showcase the robot’s capability to handle different use cases across segments like LCVs, MCVs, city buses, intercity buses, trucks, and mining vehicles. Once we prove its effectiveness, we plan to shift towards rental models.

SUN Mobility aims to cut down emissions in the transportation sector, with battery swapping providing a 40% reduction in the upfront cost of electric buses. The Smart Battery™ solution offers faster battery swaps in under three minutes, reducing operational costs by up to 20%. The compact design also allows for higher payload capacities.

To further support adoption, SUN Mobility partnered with Veera Vahana, launching India’s first battery-swappable buses for intercity routes. The company also plans to expand its reach with a strategic joint venture with IndianOil, making battery swapping accessible at over 37,000 fuel stations across India.

Since its inception in 2017, SUN Mobility has onboarded over 26,000 vehicles and operates more than 630 battery-swapping stations across the country.

CMV360 Says

SUN Mobility’s battery-swapping technology is set to revolutionize commercial vehicle electrification in India by reducing costs and improving efficiency. With strategic partnerships and a nationwide expansion plan, the company is well-positioned to boost EV adoption and contribute to India's zero-emission goals for heavy commercial vehicles.
