Key Highlights:
Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) has teamed up with the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) and Utkrisht Society for Safe Haryana, a Haryana State Police affiliate, to launch an Integrated Traffic Management System (ITMS) in Gurugram. The initiative will be funded by MSIL's Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program. The initiative includes the installation of around 400 cameras and radar systems at 23 junctions, covering 40 kilometers of road in Gurugram.
A Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) was signed between Maruti Suzuki, GMDA, and Utkrisht Society to formalize the collaboration. The ITMS will work alongside GMDA’s current systems and aims to improve traffic monitoring and enforcement in busy areas.
Integrated Traffic Management System
The ITMS will include advanced cameras and radar systems connected to a central command center. It will monitor violations like red light jumping, speeding, wrong-side driving, and helmet non-compliance, and also feature automatic number plate recognition. Detected violations will be recorded and sent to the Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) for processing.
Leadership Insights:
Shyamal Misra, IAS, Chief Executive Officer of GMDA, mentioned that Gurugram's rapid growth has increased traffic issues. He believes the project will help detect violations, improve law enforcement, and enhance road safety. Vikas Arora, IPS, Police Commissioner of Gurugram, pointed out that the targeted areas have high traffic violations. He stressed that the technology will allow digital recording of offenses, reducing subjectivity and aiding in crime prevention.
Rahul Bharti, Executive Officer of Corporate Affairs at Maruti Suzuki, thanked GMDA and the Gurugram Police for the chance to assist in traffic enforcement. He shared 2023 data showing over 1.7 lakh road accident deaths in India, with one fatality every three minutes, mainly due to human error. Bharti emphasized that electronic surveillance and enforcement could help reduce dangerous driving and promote better compliance over time.
This initiative highlights Maruti Suzuki’s continued commitment to road safety. More details and event photographs can be found through the company’s corporate communication channels.
