Cygnus Motors Made-in-India OORJA EV electric tractor has achieved a claimed world record after travelling 3,200 km from Rajkot, Gujarat, to Umling La in Ladakh in just 16 days. The journey was part of the company’s ‘Electrifying Himalayas’ expedition, which began on September 1, 2026.
The electric tractor travelled through plains, mountain roads and challenging high-altitude terrain before reaching Umling La at 19,024 feet. The expedition provided a real-world test of the tractor’s battery, motor, charging system and overall performance in demanding conditions.
OORJA EV Covers 3,200 km From Rajkot to Umling La
The expedition started in Rajkot, Gujarat, and took OORJA EV across different types of terrain before reaching Ladakh. The early section from Rajkot to Nathdwara, Rajasthan, was followed by increasingly challenging mountain routes.
The tractor eventually tackled difficult stretches including Zoji La before reaching Umling La, located near Pangong Lake in Ladakh. The journey exposed the electric tractor to changing temperatures, steep climbs, remote roads and limited charging infrastructure.
The key achievement was reaching an altitude of 19,024 feet at Umling La, making the journey a significant test for an electric tractor operating far beyond conventional agricultural conditions.
Charging Strategy Was Important During the Expedition
One of the major challenges during the journey was managing charging in remote areas. The team planned daily routes around pre-identified charging points and checked the availability of CCS2 charging stations along the route.
The expedition also used a Power Swap LVDC device for additional charging support. Charging operations were coordinated with the day's travel schedule to ensure the tractor could continue its journey.
One team handled overnight charging so that OORJA EV could begin each morning with a full battery. Another team managed daytime navigation and route operations, while a support team looked after technical inspections, route planning and field maintenance.
This approach allowed the team to manage the tractor's energy requirements while travelling through areas where charging infrastructure was limited.
A Real-World Test for Electric Tractor Technology
The Electrifying Himalayas expedition gave Cygnus Motors an opportunity to test OORJA EV in conditions that are very different from normal farm operations.
The tractor travelled across plains and mountain roads before entering the demanding high-altitude terrain of Ladakh. Steep climbs, changing weather and remote stretches placed additional demands on the electric powertrain.
During the expedition, the team monitored the battery and motor performance in real-world conditions. This data can help engineers understand how an electric tractor behaves when operating across different terrain, temperatures and energy requirements.
What the Expedition Can Teach Future Electric Tractors
The data collected during the journey could be useful in areas such as battery range, charging time, energy consumption and motor performance. These factors directly influence how an electric tractor performs during actual agricultural work.
Real-world testing can help manufacturers improve range planning, charging systems and electric powertrains for different farming requirements. Such information can also help engineers understand how electric systems respond to demanding operating conditions.
However, reaching Umling La does not mean that every electric tractor can operate under similar conditions. Agricultural applications involve different loads, working hours, soil conditions and charging requirements. Therefore, performance in a high-altitude road expedition should not be treated as a direct measure of performance across every farming application.
What This Means for India's Electric Tractor Market
Electric tractors continue to face challenges including charging infrastructure, range concerns, charging time and battery performance in extreme conditions. These challenges can become more difficult in remote and high-altitude locations where temperatures are low, roads are steep and charging facilities are limited.
The OORJA EV expedition placed several of these challenges into a real-world setting. Its journey through mountain roads and its climb to 19,024 feet at Umling La gave Cygnus Motors practical operating data while using CCS2 charging and monitoring battery and motor performance.
For Cygnus Motors, the claimed world record represents a milestone in its electric tractor programme. More importantly, the expedition generated field data that could support further development of battery, charging and motor systems.
As electric tractors become more relevant to Indian agriculture, lessons from demanding terrains such as Ladakh could help manufacturers develop systems suited to India's varied farming conditions, where operating range, performance and access to charging will remain important considerations.
The expedition demonstrates how extended real-world testing can complement conventional farm trials and provide manufacturers with practical insights into electric tractor performance.

Cygnus Motors OORJA EV has completed a 3,200-km journey from Rajkot to Umling La, reaching 19,024 feet during the Electrifying Himalayas expedition. The claimed world record is a notable milestone for the company, while the collected data on battery, charging and motor performance could support future electric tractor development. However, high-altitude expedition performance should not be considered representative of every agricultural application or operating condition.
