BAE Systems, a prominent leader in electric propulsion technology, and Eaton, a global power management company, are broadening their partnership to develop advanced electric vehicle (EV) solutions for heavy-duty trucks. This expansion signifies a strategic move from their initial focus on medium-duty trucks, reaching into the realm of heavier commercial vehicles exceeding 19 tons.
The partnership, which began with a memorandum of understanding in 2023, is now extending its reach to encompass larger and more robust vehicles. This progression underscores the commitment of both companies to addressing the evolving needs of the commercial vehicle market, particularly in the realm of electrification.
At the heart of this collaboration lies the integration of BAE System’s advanced electric motor technology and sophisticated power electronics with Eaton's newly developed HD 4-speed EV transmission. This fusion of expertise aims to offer a comprehensive EV system capable of meeting the demanding requirements of heavy-duty applications.
The resulting solution is designed to cater to a wide array of zero-emission heavy-duty platforms. From delivery trucks to regional haulers, school and transportation buses to vehicles used in material handling and garbage collection, the collaboration seeks to provide a versatile and adaptable solution to meet the varied needs of commercial operators.
Bob Lamanna, Vice President and General Manager of Power & Propulsion Solutions at BAE Systems, emphasized the significance of offering customers a complete EV solution. By combining their respective strengths, BAE Systems and Eaton aim to provide a solution that simplifies the transition to electric propulsion for heavy-duty fleets.
Mark Kramer, Business Unit Director of ePowertrain at Eaton's Vehicle Group, highlighted the enhanced performance and reliability of their systems across a broader range of vehicle ratings. This expansion of scope ensures that the collaboration's robust system delivers high performance and reliability across a wider spectrum of vehicle classes and sizes.
BAE Systems brings to the table its extensive experience in vehicle electrification, boasting power electronics that utilize advanced materials and a compact, modular design. This design not only enhances reliability but also ensures adaptability across different vehicle platforms. Meanwhile, Eaton's specialized MD and HD EV transmissions are engineered to optimize range, grade capability, and acceleration for commercial electric vehicles, further enhancing the overall performance and efficiency of the integrated system.
