Himachal Pradesh is currently testing a new and sustainable method for road construction called Full-Depth Reclamation (FDR). This trial is taking place on a 20-km road stretch between Ganpati Temple and Koon ka Tar, near Mandi city, under the Prime Minister’s Rural Road Scheme (PMGSY).

FDR technology involves recycling the materials of existing roads to create new ones. This process helps to reduce the need for fresh resources, minimize waste, and lower the impact on the environment. It is also cost-effective and durable, making it a promising alternative to traditional road construction methods.
NPS Chauhan, Chief Engineer of the Public Works Department (PWD) Mandi Zone, confirmed that the trial is underway. He mentioned that the quality of the road will be assessed after one week, and based on the results, the technology will be considered for future use. Chauhan also noted that feedback from other states indicates that FDR is both eco-friendly and cost-efficient.
If the trial is successful, the government plans to use FDR to construct 20 roads in Mandi and Kullu districts.

The FDR method not only helps protect the environment but also saves money and reduces the time needed for road construction. Nitish Sharma, Managing Director of the company running the trial, explained that traditional road construction costs around Rs. 100 per unit, while FDR reduces this cost to Rs. 60-64 per unit. This method also allows for faster completion of projects, providing significant savings for the government.
For the trial, specialized machinery was used, and its results will determine whether the method will be adopted on a larger scale in the state.
If successful, the FDR technique could become the standard method for road construction in Himachal Pradesh. Its ability to reuse materials makes it a more environmentally friendly option, which aligns with the state’s goals of promoting sustainable infrastructure.
This trial represents an important step toward improving road construction practices, focusing on both cost savings and environmental sustainability.

The FDR technology trial in Mandi is a promising step towards eco-friendly and cost-effective road construction. If successful, it could transform road-building practices in Himachal Pradesh, aligning with the state's goals of sustainability while offering significant savings in both time and resources for future infrastructure projects.
