When we think of watermelon, the image of a green exterior with a red, juicy interior comes to mind. But now, farmers are turning their attention to a different kind of watermelon—one that's green on the outside but surprisingly yellow on the inside. This yellow variant is said to be sweeter and more flavorful than its red counterpart, and its market price reflects that often fetching double the price of red watermelons. In India, this unique fruit is gaining popularity, particularly in regions like Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh, although its origins trace back to Africa.
Initially, before the dominance of red watermelons, yellow watermelons, known as Desert King, were the norm. However, with the arrival of cross-breeding for red varieties, the cultivation of yellow watermelons was reduced. But now, the farmers are rediscovering the appeal of yellow watermelons.

In India, two types of Taiwanese watermelons are cultivated. One variety is green on the outside and yellow inside, while the other is yellow both inside and out. Currently, farmers are primarily cultivating the latter, which boasts a vibrant yellow exterior and a delicious red interior.
Cultivating yellow watermelons, particularly the Taiwanese variety, can be a profitable venture. Using Vishala seeds from Taiwan, farmers can plant around 6,000 saplings per acre in December, with an investment of approximately Rs 1.10 lakh. Despite expenses such as seed costs and farming equipment, organic farming practices can yield around Rs 1 lakh in profit per acre.
Yellow watermelons offer a range of nutrients that include vitamins B, C, A, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, and beta-carotene. With its hydrating properties, low-calorie content, and immune-boosting benefits, it's an ideal choice for health-conscious consumers.
In the market, yellow watermelons command a higher price, with rates averaging around Rs 50 per kg, compared to Rs 30 per kg for regular watermelons. Seeds for yellow watermelon cultivation are available through various channels, including horticulture department nurseries and online platforms like Amazon.com.
Yellow watermelon cultivation follows similar methods to red watermelons, typically requiring fertile, well-drained soil. Sowing can be done directly or through planting, with different techniques suited to varying climates and seasons. Treatments like Carbendazim and Trichoderma viride enhance seed quality and disease resistance, ensuring a healthy yield.
