₹5 crore statewide sales target for Holi.
Herbal, chemical-free gulal made by SHG women.
Sales counters set up across all districts.
Institutional and bulk procurement encouraged.
Supports ‘Lakhpati Didi’ income growth mission.
This Holi, women from Self-Help Groups (SHGs) in Uttar Pradesh are adding new colors to the festival. Under the central and state governments Lakhpati Didi initiative, the Uttar Pradesh State Rural Livelihoods Mission (UPSRLM) has launched a special statewide campaign to boost sales of products made by SHG women.
The main aim of this campaign is to increase income, promote local products, and help thousands of rural women move closer to becoming financially independent “Lakhpati Didis.”

UPSRLM has set a state-level sales target of ₹5 crore for Holi products this year. The campaign is expected to directly benefit thousands of SHG women across the state.
By focusing on festival-based sales, branding, and institutional marketing, the government wants to create more income opportunities for rural women. If the target is achieved, the model can be repeated during other festivals and even in other states.
To ensure strong sales, exhibitions and counters for SHG products are being set up at Vikas Bhawans, Collectorates, Tehsil offices, and other government premises in all districts.
District administrations, municipal bodies, and other departments are supporting institutional and bulk procurement. All districts have been instructed to regularly update product details, sales locations, contact numbers, and daily sales data on a Google Sheet. This allows state-level monitoring, ensuring transparency and smooth execution of the campaign.
This year, SHG women are preparing natural and eco-friendly herbal gulal for Holi, which will be celebrated on March 4. The gulal is made using natural ingredients like palash flowers, beetroot, marigold flowers, and spinach juice.
These colors are completely chemical-free, skin-friendly, and safe for the environment. With rising awareness about health and eco-friendly celebrations, demand for herbal gulal is expected to grow. This initiative also supports the spirit of “vocal for local” by promoting locally made products that strengthen the rural economy.
Along with gulal and abir, SHG women are also selling papad, chips, sweets, incense sticks, and handicrafts. The campaign provides a ready market for these locally made products, helping women earn better income during the festive season.
Branding and institutional marketing are being used as key strategies to expand their reach and increase visibility.
According to the Mission Director, offering a wider market during a major festival like Holi is a strong step toward the economic empowerment of rural women. The campaign is designed to take rural entrepreneurship to new heights and make women self-reliant.
Experts believe that achieving the ₹5 crore sales target will give SHG products greater recognition and create a sustainable market system for the future.
For the “Lakhpati Didis” of Uttar Pradesh, this Holi is not just about colors, it is about income growth, opportunity, and a brighter, self-reliant future.

If successful, the model may expand to other festivals and states, giving SHG women a sustainable market and a brighter financial future.
