  • ₹13,500 to be recovered from each ineligible beneficiary.

  • 2,656 govt employees found using fake documents.

  • Dual benefit takers of the two schemes are disqualified.

  • New rules allow only poor, non-employed women to apply.

Maharashtra Government Takes Strict Action Against Ineligible Beneficiaries of Ladki Bahin Yojana

In a major update for women enrolled under Maharashtra’s Ladki Bahin Yojana (similar to Madhya Pradesh’s Ladli Behna Yojana), over 7 lakh women have been removed from the scheme. The government has now announced that it will recover the full amount given to these women so far, as they were found ineligible or misusing the scheme benefits.

Why Women Were Removed from the Ladki Bahin Yojana?

The scheme, aimed at helping financially weak and needy women, was reportedly misused by several beneficiaries. Maharashtra Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankulestated that many government employees wrongly took advantage of the scheme, which offers ₹1,500 per month. This financial aid was meant only for economically disadvantaged women, but ineligible applicants claimed the benefits, violating the core purpose of the program.

How Were the Ineligible Women Identified?

The Maharashtra government conducted a detailed data verification process using:

  • General Administration Department

  • IT Department

  • Aadhaar-based verification

During this process:

  • 1.20 lakh female government employees were reviewed.

  • It was found that 2,656 government-employed women took benefits using fake documents.

  • More than 7 lakh women were receiving benefits from both Ladki Bahin Yojana and Mano Shetkari Yojana, which is against the rules.

Total Amount to Be Recovered

The government had paid ₹13,500 per woman from August 2024 to March 2025. This brings the total amount to be recovered to approximately ₹3.58 crore.

Departments have started the recovery process, and affected women have been asked to return the money. Failure to do so within the given time limit will result in legal action.

Who Will No Longer Get the Scheme Benefits?

As per the updated rules, the following women will not be eligible for the Ladli Behna Yojana, Maharashtra:

  • Government or semi-government employees

  • Women whose family income exceeds ₹2.5 lakh per year

  • Women are already getting regular financial support from other state schemes

Who Will Be Eligible Now?

The Maharashtra government has now revised the eligibility criteria to ensure only truly needy women benefit from the scheme:

  • Women aged 21 to 65 years

  • Women with an annual family income below ₹2.5 lakh

  • Married, unmarried, widowed, divorced, abandoned, or destitute women

CMV360 Says

The Maharashtra government is working to ensure that the Ladli Behna Yojana reaches only the deserving and truly needy women. Misuse of such welfare schemes not only harms government finances but also takes away the rightful share of genuinely poor women. With the new rules and strict monitoring, the government hopes to bring more transparency and fairness to this women's empowerment initiative.
