The Madhya Pradesh government has given a major boost to the agriculture sector in the 2026-27 Budget. During the budget speech in the Legislative Assembly, Finance Minister Jagdish Devda announced big steps to increase farmers income, improve irrigation facilities, and promote sustainable energy use. The biggest highlight is the launch of 1 lakh solar irrigation pumps under the Pradhan Mantri Krishak Surya Mitra Yojana (PMKSY).

Under this scheme, the state will provide 100,000 solar irrigation pumps to farmers during the financial year 2026-27. The government has allocated ₹3,000 crore for this initiative.
The main aim is to reduce farmers dependence on diesel and traditional electricity for irrigation. Solar-powered pumps will lower farming costs and provide uninterrupted energy supply. Earlier, 1.25 lakh transformers were installed under the Permanent Irrigation Pump Connection Scheme, strengthening rural power infrastructure. Now, the focus has shifted towards sustainable and cost-effective irrigation through solar energy.
The Pradhan Mantri Krishak Surya Mitra Yojana is a joint initiative of the state and central government. Farmers will receive subsidies on solar pumps, making irrigation more affordable. Small and marginal farmers are expected to benefit the most, as they often face high expenses due to diesel and expensive power connections.
Apart from solar pumps, the budget also includes major relief for agricultural electricity consumers. A provision of ₹20,485 crore has been made for 2026-27 to supply power to farmers at subsidized rates. This fund will directly support subsidy and relief schemes, helping reduce production costs and indirectly increasing farmers income.
Experts believe that solar-based irrigation will make farming more profitable and eco-friendly in the long run. It will reduce carbon emissions and allow farmers to irrigate crops at convenient times, which can improve crop productivity. The government has planned a phased application and approval process to ensure maximum eligible farmers benefit from the scheme.
With ₹3,000 crore for solar pumps and ₹20,485 crore for electricity subsidies, the MP Budget 2026-27 clearly shows strong focus on energy reforms and cost control in agriculture. The implementation speed and impact of the scheme will be closely watched in the coming months.

The MP Budget 2026-27 brings strong support for farmers through solar irrigation and electricity subsidies. With 1 lakh solar pumps and ₹3,000 crore investment, the government aims to cut farming costs and promote clean energy. The ₹20,485 crore electricity relief will further reduce financial pressure on agricultural consumers. If implemented effectively, this initiative can improve irrigation access, increase farm income, and make agriculture more sustainable and profitable in Madhya Pradesh.
