Free adoption of cows and calves.
₹1,500 monthly assistance per animal.
Focus on Sahiwal and Red Sindhi breeds.
Reduction in the stray cattle problem.
Boost to rural income and milk production.
The district administration has launched a thoughtful and farmer-friendly initiative under the Gaushala Yojana, aimed at strengthening the rural economy and improving cattle welfare. This scheme brings a big relief to livestock owners while offering a practical solution to the long-standing Anna Pratha (stray cattle problem). Under this initiative, cows and calves kept in cow shelters of Chitrakoot district will now become a steady source of income for rural families instead of being a financial burden.
Under the new cow shelter scheme, residents of the Patha region of Chitrakoot can adopt a cow or calf from a government cow shelter and raise it at home. In return, the government will provide financial assistance of ₹1,500 per month per animal. This support will help cattle owners manage fodder, healthcare, and daily maintenance expenses, while also allowing them to earn extra income from milk production.
At present, a large number of cattle are housed in various cow shelters across Chitrakoot district, and their maintenance costs the government lakhs of rupees every month. To manage this growing expense, the administration has introduced this adoption-based model. By allowing cattle to be reared locally, the scheme ensures better care for animals and reduces the operational burden on cow shelters.
According to Chief Medical Officer, Kawardha, Suresh Kumar Pandey, this scheme is not limited to financial help alone. It also focuses on breed improvement and higher milk productivity. Under the artificial insemination program, 50% advanced breeds like Sahiwal and Red Sindhi will be included. This is expected to help future cows produce 8 to 10 litres of milk per day, improving milk availability in local markets and increasing farmers’ income.
Under the Gaushala Yojana, one individual can adopt up to four cattle. Interested livestock owners must fill out a prescribed application form available at the Animal Husbandry Department. After verification and inspection, cattle will be allotted from the respective cow shelters. Departmental teams will also visit homes regularly to ensure proper care of animals and effective implementation of the scheme.
Stray cattle often roam freely and damage standing crops, creating major challenges for farmers. This scheme directly addresses the issue by placing these animals in safe homes with proper care. As a result, crop damage will reduce, animal welfare will improve, and farmers will gain a reliable source of income.
The Gaushala Yojana is expected to create new income opportunities for rural families. Along with monthly government assistance, livestock owners can earn through milk sales. This initiative promotes self-reliance, cattle conservation, and sustainable rural development. Overall, it is a golden opportunity for farmers and livestock owners in Chitrakoot district, offering economic benefits while supporting social and environmental balance.

The Gaushala Yojana is a farmer-friendly initiative that turns cattle welfare into a reliable income source. By providing free cows and a monthly assistance of ₹1,500, the scheme supports livestock owners, improves milk production, and reduces the burden on cow shelters. It also helps control stray cattle issues, strengthens the rural economy, and promotes breed improvement for long-term sustainability.
