In a major move to boost farming productivity and farmer income, the Haryana government has signed a key agreement with the International Potato Center (CIP) to produce and supply high-quality, disease-free potato seeds. This initiative will benefit not just Haryana, but also other states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, and Odisha.

To support farmers with good-quality seeds at affordable prices, the Haryana Horticulture Department has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with CIP. The agreement focuses on producing high-quality, disease-free, and climate-suitable potato seeds through advanced technology. This effort aims to double farmer incomes and make farming more profitable.
Haryana Agriculture Minister Shyam Singh Rana emphasized that this agreement particularly benefits farmers in South Haryana, where potato seed production has so far been minimal.
The Central Government has approved ₹4.48 crore for this project under the National Agricultural Development Scheme (Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana - RKVY) for the financial year 2025-26. The total cost of the project is ₹18.70 crore, and it will be implemented over four years. This investment will help Haryana become self-sufficient in potato seed production, reducing dependency on other states.
The project will produce early-generation seeds that are disease-free and suitable for local climate conditions. These seeds will reduce crop losses caused by disease and lead to higher yields. The seed production will take place at the Potato Technology Center (PTC) in Shamgarh, Karnal. This center already has modern infrastructure like an aeroponics unit, controlled climate facility, and ARC technology to support the production of high-quality seeds.

Initially, farmers in the southern districts of Dadri, Bhiwani, Mahendragarh, and Rewari will get direct access to these seeds. Currently, seed production in these areas is low, and farmers have to rely on external sources. With local availability, farmers will save on costs and gain easy access to better seeds.
Agriculture Minister Shyam Singh Ranastated that this project will help Haryana become a major hub for potato seed production. The seeds will be supplied to states like UP, Bihar, MP, Odisha, and Jharkhand. This will enhance the availability, quality, and productivity of potato crops across these regions.
With the use of disease-free and high-quality seeds, farmers can expect better crop yields and higher-quality produce. This will fetch better prices in the market, resulting in higher income. The government sees this project as a long-term initiative to bring technological innovation to agriculture and promote modern farming practices.
This MoU marks a strong collaboration between scientific research institutions and state governments, aiming for a large-scale impact in agriculture through improved seed quality and modern technology.

This initiative by the Haryana government, in partnership with the International Potato Center, will boost potato seed production, benefit farmers with quality seeds, and enhance crop yield. It will reduce dependence on other states, increase farmer income, and promote agricultural innovation. The project will also help Haryana emerge as a key hub for potato seed supply across India.
