This year, unseasonal rains caused severe damage to Kharif crops in many districts of Gujarat. Farmers suffered heavy losses, impacting their income and livelihoods. To address this crisis, the state government quickly ordered a crop survey and launched a special relief portal for crop loss compensation. Around 33 lakh farmers applied for assistance, and more than 27 lakh applications have already been approved.
According to government data, more than 22.90 lakh farmers have received ₹6,805 crore in compensation within the last 10 days. The government has assured that remaining eligible farmers will receive their payments soon. Forest and Environment Minister Arjun Modhwadia said that compensation rates have been doubled this time. Earlier, farmers received ₹11,000 per hectare, which has now been increased to ₹22,000 per hectare. Farmers owning up to two hectares are eligible for a maximum assistance of ₹44,000. The scheme has benefited farmers in nearly 17,000 out of 18,000 villages in the state.

Along with compensation, the Gujarat government is also focusing on strengthening farmers’ income through Minimum Support Price (MSP) procurement. The state has set a target to procure Kharif crops worth ₹15,000 crore at MSP this year. Major crops include groundnut, moong, urad, and soybean. So far, 10.49 lakh tonnes of produce worth ₹7,537 crore have been procured, directly benefiting around 4.75 lakh farmers.
Pulse farmers are also getting strong support under MSP procurement. The government has already transferred ₹3,468 crore to the bank accounts of 2.18 lakh farmers. To ensure smooth operations, 317 procurement centers have been set up in 114 talukas. Additionally, the state government has announced that 100% of pigeon pea (tur) produce will be purchased at MSP from December 22, providing major relief to pulse farmers from price fluctuations.
Overall, Gujarat’s crop loss compensation and MSP procurement drive is proving to be a lifeline for farmers affected by unseasonal rains. Increased compensation, assured procurement, and timely payments are offering immediate relief and long-term financial stability. This farmer-friendly initiative has restored hope among Gujarat’s farming community and strengthened their confidence for the coming seasons.
