7 new red rot-resistant varieties approved.
Developed by ICAR and IISR Lucknow.
Higher yield up to 600 quintals per acre.
Improved sugar recovery for better payments.
Lower pesticide cost, higher farmer income.
There is big and positive news for sugarcane farmers across the country. In a major step, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and the Indian Institute of Sugarcane Research (IISR), Lucknow, have jointly developed and secured approval for seven new improved sugarcane varieties.
Under a government order issued this month, these varieties have received official clearance from the Central Variety Release Committee (CVRC). With this approval, the new varieties are now considered safe and reliable for large-scale cultivation.
This initiative is expected to give a new direction to sugarcane farming and help increase farmers income in the coming seasons.
For the past few years, sugarcane farmers in several states, including Uttar Pradesh, have been facing serious losses due to a dangerous disease called red rot. It is often referred to as “sugarcane cancer” because it hollows out the crop from inside and destroys the entire yield.
The newly approved varieties have been tested for several years under different climatic conditions. Scientists have confirmed that these varieties are more tolerant to red rot. This means farmers can reduce their spending on pesticides and disease control medicines, lowering their overall cultivation cost.
To meet different farming requirements, the seven new varieties have been divided into early and medium/late maturing categories.
CoS 17231 (Bismil)
CoP 16437 (Rajendra Ganna-1)
These early varieties mature faster and help farmers supply sugarcane to mills on time. Since the crop is harvested early, farmers can prepare their fields quickly and sow wheat or other Rabi crops without delay.
Medium and Late Maturing Varieties
CoS 17018 (Karan-17)
CoS 16233 (Roshan)
CoPb 18213
These varieties are known for their thickness and heavier weight. They remain strong even if they stay longer in the field, which can result in higher production per acre.
One of the biggest advantages of these new sugarcane varieties is improved sugar recovery. Some of them have shown higher sugar percentage, which can increase overall sugar production for mills. Better recovery can also support faster payments to farmers.
Experts say that if farmers use modern trench planting methods along with balanced irrigation and proper fertilizer management, they can achieve yields of 500 to 600 quintals per acre. This is much higher compared to traditional varieties.
Different parts of Uttar Pradesh have different soil types and climate conditions. Some varieties are more suitable for western and central regions, while others perform better in eastern areas.
Agricultural experts advise farmers to consult local Krishi Vigyan Kendras or agricultural scientists before selecting seeds. Choosing the right variety for the right region is essential to achieve maximum production and profit.
These new varieties can solve two major challenges at once: protection from red rot disease and higher productivity. Reduced pesticide use means lower expenses, and improved yield and sugar recovery mean better income.
The process of making seeds available through government centers and authorized agencies at the state level has already started.
The approval of seven new red rot-resistant sugarcane varieties brings fresh hope for sugarcane farmers. With scientific guidance and modern farming techniques, farmers can expect better production, reduced risk of disease, and higher earnings in the coming years.
This step by ICAR and IISR can play a key role in strengthening sugarcane cultivation and improving the overall financial condition of farmers.
