Volvo Trucks has introduced new, more powerful batteries for its medium-duty electric trucks, with a range of up to 450km and the ability to electrify even more metropolitan transport tasks.

The batteries in Volvo's medium-duty truck series provide 42% more energy capacity. It delivers up to 450 km in total range on a single charge.

This means that the vehicles can handle most routes and assignments in metropolitan areas, as well as powering equipment for energy-intensive tasks like garbage collection or city building. The extra energy can also be used for long-duration city driving operations without needing to recharge. The Volvo FL Electric now has a range of up to 450km, while the Volvo FE Electric has a range of up to 300km.

One of the notable features of the new batteries is their capacity. This feature enables Volvo's electric trucks to work in extended shifts, meeting the demands of urban transportation. As a result, the use of these batteries increases productivity while also assuring a sustainable and environmentally beneficial transportation solution.

"Our electric trucks, with a range of up to 450 km, are ready to replace our customers' entire fleet of diesel city trucks. The Volvo FL and FE Electric emit low levels of pollution and noise, which benefits the environment, the driver, and everyone who lives and moves around the city," explains Jessica Sandström, SVP Product Management at Volvo Trucks.

Because of the increased capacity, fewer batteries are required to provide the same power that is already available. Customers can enhance their payload by utilizing fewer batteries if their assignments require shorter ranges, with a payload gain of 500kg for every battery not carried.

On a typical route, replacing a Volvo FL or Volvo FE diesel truck with an electric version powered by renewable electricity may save around 30 tons of CO2. The new Volvo FL and FE Electric are now available for order, with delivery scheduled for autumn 2023.

Volvo Trucks has sold approximately 5,000 electric trucks in 40 countries since it began producing completely electric trucks in 2019. By 2030, the company hopes to have half of its global total truck sales be electric.
