The Uttar Pradesh government has launched a major initiative to strengthen the rural economy and increase milk production across the state. Under the Chief Minister's Swadeshi Gau Samvardhan Yojana, livestock farmers can now receive a subsidy of up to ₹80,000 for purchasing high milk-yielding indigenous cow breeds.

The scheme is designed to encourage dairy farming, improve the income of cattle farmers, and create new employment opportunities in rural areas. It also focuses on promoting indigenous cow breeds known for their superior milk production.

Subsidy Available on High Milk-Yielding Indigenous Cows

Under the scheme, farmers can purchase a unit consisting of two indigenous cows from selected breeds, including Gir, Sahiwal, Tharparkar, and Haryana. The state government will provide financial assistance of up to 40% of the total cost, with a maximum subsidy limit of ₹80,000.

According to Sudhakar Prasad, District Coordinator of Nand Baba Milk Mission, the initiative aims to encourage the adoption of quality indigenous breeds and enhance the state's milk production capacity.

Conditions for Purchasing Cows Under the Scheme

To ensure better productivity and long-term benefits, the government has laid down specific eligibility conditions for the animals purchased under the scheme.

The cows must be in their first or second lactation (calving stage). This requirement is intended to ensure that farmers receive healthy and productive animals capable of providing higher milk yields. Beneficiaries are also required to maintain a unit of two cows under the scheme, promoting a sustainable dairy farming model.

Special Focus on Women Dairy Farmers

One of the key highlights of the Chief Minister's Swadeshi Gau Samvardhan Yojana is its emphasis on women empowerment. The government has reserved 50% of the total target for women dairy producers and cattle rearers.

This reservation is expected to encourage more rural women to participate in dairy farming and animal husbandry activities. By supporting women-led dairy enterprises and cow-rearing units, the scheme aims to improve financial independence and promote self-employment opportunities in villages.

Online Application Process Started

The online application process for the scheme started on June 11, 2026, and interested farmers can apply until July 10, 2026.

Eligible livestock farmers can submit their applications through the official Nand Baba Dugdh Mission portal. Applicants will need to provide essential documents such as:

  • Identity proof

  • Bank passbook copy

  • Passport-size photograph

Detailed guidelines and eligibility criteria are available on the scheme's online portal.

Assistance Available for Farmers

To ensure a smooth application process, the government has arranged support facilities for applicants. Farmers facing any difficulties while applying can seek assistance from:

  • Chief Veterinary Officer's office

  • Deputy Dairy Development Officer's office

  • Chief Development Officer's office

Officials at these offices will provide guidance regarding eligibility, documentation, and the application process.

Scheme Expected to Boost Rural Economy

Experts believe that the scheme will significantly benefit Uttar Pradesh's dairy sector. By promoting indigenous cow breeds and supporting dairy farming, the initiative is expected to increase milk production while generating additional income opportunities for livestock farmers.

The scheme may also create new self-employment opportunities for rural youth and women, helping strengthen the rural economy. With financial support for purchasing quality indigenous cows, the Chief Minister's Swadeshi Gau Samvardhan Yojana is expected to become an important step toward improving the livelihoods of cattle farmers and expanding dairy-based entrepreneurship in the state.
