UP Approves ₹1.82 Crore Tissue Culture Lab in Gorakhpur for Improved Sugarcane Seeds

Sugarcane farmers in Uttar Pradesh are set to benefit from a major government initiative. The Uttar Pradesh government has approved a ₹1.82 crore project to establish a tissue culture laboratory in Gorakhpur for developing breeder seeds of new and improved sugarcane varieties.

The laboratory is expected to strengthen the availability of high-quality planting material and improved seeds for farmers. Better sugarcane varieties can help improve crop productivity and may support higher farmer incomes in the future.

The project is part of a broader push by the Uttar Pradesh government to strengthen agriculture and allied sectors through infrastructure development, modern technology, training and improved farming resources.

₹286.46 Crore Agricultural Projects Approved

Recently, the Yogi government approved projects worth ₹286.46 crore for the development of agriculture and related sectors in Uttar Pradesh.

State Chief Secretary SP Goyal directed officials to complete the approved projects within the stipulated timeframe and ensure proper utilisation of the sanctioned budget. He also stressed the importance of project quality, financial discipline and regular monitoring so that farmers receive maximum benefits from government schemes.

New Sugarcane Breeder Seeds to Be Developed

The upcoming tissue culture laboratory in Gorakhpur will focus on producing breeder seeds for new sugarcane varieties.

High-quality breeder seeds and improved planting material are important for maintaining crop quality and improving productivity. The new facility is expected to strengthen the seed development system and help make improved sugarcane varieties available to farmers.

₹60 Crore Approved to Modernise Government Farms

The Uttar Pradesh government has also approved ₹60 crore for a two-year programme to modernise government agricultural farms.

The programme will include:

• Introduction of modern agricultural machinery

• Development of tube wells for irrigation

• Creation and improvement of drainage facilities

These initiatives are expected to improve the efficiency of government farms and encourage the wider adoption of modern agricultural practices.

Pest Management and Soil Testing Facilities to Expand

The government has approved several projects to strengthen pest management and soil testing services.

A total of ₹2.78 crore has been sanctioned to expand the production capacity of nine Integrated Pest Management (IPM) laboratories operated by the Agriculture Department.

Additionally:

• ₹3.71 crore has been approved for constructing a new IPM laboratory and soil testing laboratory building in Deoria.

• ₹2.60 crore has been allocated for a soil testing laboratory building in Lakhimpur Kheri.

These facilities are expected to provide farmers with better access to pest management support and soil testing services.

Farmer-Scientist Dialogue and Training Get ₹8.80 Crore

To improve the connection between farmers and agricultural experts, projects worth ₹8.80 crore have been approved for farmer-scientist dialogues and Krishi Teerth programmes.

These programmes will be organised through agricultural universities and Krishi Vigyan Kendras. Agricultural extension officers and staff will also receive training.

The initiative will allow farmers to learn directly from agricultural scientists about modern technology, crop management and improved farming practices.

Support for Agricultural Mechanisation and Horticulture

At the State Agricultural Management Institute in Rehman Kheda, the government has approved ₹6.10 crore for agricultural mechanisation, combine harvester training and boundary wall construction.

Meanwhile, ₹5.98 crore has been approved for various horticulture development projects. These investments aim to promote agricultural mechanisation and strengthen the horticulture sector across the state.

₹17.28 Crore Approved for Seed Storage Warehouses

The Uttar Pradesh Seed Development Corporation will construct seed storage warehouses in Bulandshahr, Mainpuri and Jalaun. The three warehouses will have a combined storage capacity of 5,300 metric tonnes, with projects worth ₹17.28 crore approved for their construction.

In addition, ₹54.55 crore has been sanctioned for developing warehouses and storage facilities at 14 PACS. These facilities will provide a combined storage capacity of approximately 25,000 metric tonnes.

Fisheries and Agricultural Universities Also Receive Funding

The government has approved ₹7.91 crore for various Fisheries Department schemes. The funds will be used for training programmes, renovation of the Gorakhnath Hatchery and strengthening government fish farms to improve fish seed production capacity.

Another ₹13.80 crore has been approved for research, infrastructure development and asset construction at agricultural universities in Banda, Ayodhya and Meerut, along with the Veterinary University in Mathura.

According to Agriculture Department Principal Secretary Ravindra, a total outlay of ₹500 crore was approved under the State Agricultural Development Scheme for 2026-27, while the state budget currently provides ₹200 crore for the scheme.

The overall objective is to strengthen agricultural infrastructure and provide farmers with better technology, improved resources and modern farming support.
