Uber Receives License to Operate Buses Under Delhi Premium Bus Scheme

Key Highlights:

•    Uber received a license to operate buses under Delhi's Premium Bus Scheme.
•    Customers can pre-book Uber Shuttle seats via the app.
•    Air-conditioned buses will run on predefined routes in Delhi.
•    Users can track bus locations and ETAs, with cashless payments and 24/7 safety support.
•    The initiative aims to reduce congestion and emissions while providing driver jobs.

The Transport Department of the Government of Delhi has granted Uber, a popular ride-hailing app, an aggregator license to operate buses under the Delhi Premium Bus Scheme. This makes Delhi the first state to issue such a license, and Uber the first aggregator to receive one under the plan.

Uber Shuttle Service

The official launch of Uber Shuttle comes after a successful pilot program in Delhi NCR and operational experience in Kolkata under an MoU with the West Bengal government.

Customers in Delhi can now pre-book seats on their preferred routes by selecting the 'Uber Shuttle' option within the Uber app.

This is designed for daily commuting. Uber Shuttle intends to provide tech-optimized mobility solutions through private bus fleets, solving traffic congestion and lowering carbon emissions by encouraging shared travel.

Features and Benefits of Uber Shuttle

Uber Shuttle buses with air conditioning will travel on preset routes linking Delhi's corporate sectors and residential neighborhoods. The Uber app allows commuters to pre-book seats up to a week in advance, track the bus's live location and route, and display its predicted time of arrival (ETA).

This service guarantees a smooth and convenient commuting experience with cashless payments and round-the-clock safety support, including access to a 24x7 Safety Line.

Government's Support and Vision

According to a Transport Department representative, "The Government of Delhi remains committed to improving public transport services and diversifying available transportation options to streamline commuting for Delhiites. We are delighted to provide Uber the opportunity to use its worldwide experience and technological expertise to help improve the commuting experience for Delhi residents."

Amit Deshpande, Head of Uber Shuttle in India, stated, "We are committed to building a business that meets the mobility needs of every Indian, and buses are an important addition to our existing product lineup. Following a successful trial program in which we saw high demand for buses, we are excited to formally provide the convenience of Uber rides to buses in Delhi. Uber Shuttle, which aligns with Uber's worldwide sustainability goals, will help put more people in one vehicle while also reducing traffic congestion and carbon footprint. We are certain that this effort will benefit everyone by providing a new choice for commuters and offering a new source of income for drivers."
