Uber Technologies Inc and Aurora Innovation Inc, a self-driving technology company, will expand their driverless pilot program in Texas to meet increased delivery demand during the holidays. In the United States, human truck drivers are not permitted to drive for more than 11 hours per day. Aurora Innovation, which also has partnerships with FedEx Corp (FDX.N) and Toyota Motor Corp, plans to launch the Aurora Driver self-driving platform by the end of 2024.
Aurora announced that the program will be expanded to the recently launched 600-mile commercial lane between Fort Worth and El Paso in Texas to support customers of logistics company Uber Freight as they ship goods this holiday season.
Uber Freight is a platform that connects shippers who need goods moved with truck drivers who are available. Autonomous goods hauling is seen as the future of logistics because it has the potential to increase truck utilization and increase transportation frequency between terminals.
"We're developing Aurora Horizon to assist carriers of all sizes in alleviating some of the supply-chain pressures that typically accompany the holiday season," Aurora co-founder Sterling Anderson explained.
