In the second quarter of the fiscal year, electric vehicle sales increased by 38.3 per cent year on year to 3.91 lakhs from 2.82 lakhs, led by three-wheelers, while two-wheeler sales decreased. Despite a general downturn in vehicle sales, the electric three-wheelers segment has emerged as a shining star, having an impressive 38.3% annual increase.

According to government data, the adoption of electric vehicles in the four-wheeler category has yet to gain headway. The overall number of electric vehicles sold in the four quarters of 2023, from July to September, is 15.15 lakhs.

Two- and three-wheelers dominated sales in the second quarter, accounting for about 93.7 per cent of total volume. However, two-wheeler sales dropped 19.8% to 1.97 lakh units sold, while three-wheeler sales increased 28.6% to 1.68 lakh units.

Four-wheeler sales have also declined, with a 5.8 per cent share of overall EV sales. EV sales were the highest in Uttar Pradesh in the second quarter, accounting for 76,652 units, or 19.6 per cent of total sales. Three-wheelers accounted for more than 80% of total sales.

Maharashtra, Karnataka, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, and Telangana have the highest two-wheeler sales in India, accounting for 59% of all high-speed two-wheeler sales.

Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Assam had the highest percentage of three-wheeler sales, with 39.5 per cent, 13.2 per cent, and 10%, respectively.

Sales Surge Challenges

  • While the automotive industry was affected by supply chain disruptions, economic uncertainties, and changing consumer preferences, electric three-wheelers stood their ground.
  • The surge in demand can be attributed to several factors, including urbanization, migration to cities, and the need for efficient last-mile transportation.

Government Policies and Incentives

  • Favorable governmental policies and incentives have played a pivotal role in driving the adoption of electric three-wheelers.
  • Subsidies, tax benefits, and awareness campaigns have encouraged both fleet operators and individual buyers to opt for cleaner and greener mobility solutions.

Lowered Prices and Affordability

  • As technology advances and economies of scale increase, the cost of manufacturing electric three-wheelers has decreased.
  • Lowered prices have made these vehicles more accessible to a wider audience, further fueling their popularity.

Increasing environmental consciousness and a growing awareness of climate have influenced consumers to shift towards sustainable alternatives. Electric three-wheelers, with their reduced emissions and noise levels, align perfectly with this shift in mindset.

Industry experts predict that this demand will continue in the coming years. Collaborations between manufacturers, battery technology advancements, and infrastructure development will further boost the sales of the electric three-wheeler segment.

In summary, the electric three-wheeler market’s remarkable growth demonstrates its resilience and adaptability. As we look toward the future, these three-wheeler vehicles will revolutionize urban transportation, one quiet revolution at a time.
