In a major relief for farmers, the government of Tamil Nadu has announced a crop loan waiver scheme for farmers who had taken loans from cooperative banks. Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay said the decision was taken to reduce the financial burden on farmers and support them ahead of the upcoming farming season.
Under the new scheme, marginal farmers will get a complete waiver of crop loans up to ₹50,000. Other farmers will receive relief of up to ₹5,000. The government believes this step will provide much-needed support to farmers facing rising cultivation costs, uncertain weather conditions, and financial pressure.
According to the state government, around 14.22 lakh farmers across Tamil Nadu will benefit from the crop loan waiver scheme. The implementation of this scheme will put an additional financial burden of nearly ₹2,044 crore on the state government.
Officials said the move aims to help farmers reduce debt and improve their financial condition before the next sowing season. Farmers will also be able to access fresh loans for agricultural activities after receiving relief under the scheme.
The government clarified that only crop loans taken from cooperative banks between May 1, 2025, and February 28, 2026, will be eligible under the scheme.
Marginal farmers will receive a full waiver of loans up to ₹50,000, while larger farmers will get relief up to ₹5,000. The state government also indicated that more farmer welfare measures could be introduced in the future if required.
Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay stated that strengthening the economic condition of farmers remains one of the government’s top priorities. He said the waiver scheme is an important step towards making farming more profitable and reducing the financial stress faced by farming families.
According to the government, the decision will not only support farmers but also strengthen the rural economy by improving spending capacity in villages and agricultural communities.
The crop loan waiver was one of the major promises made during the assembly election campaign. During the elections, Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay and his party had promised financial relief for farmers through loan waivers.
Political experts believe that implementing the promise after coming to power may strengthen the government’s support in rural areas and create a positive image among farmers.
Agricultural experts have welcomed the decision and described it as an important short-term relief measure. However, they also said that long-term improvements in irrigation facilities, quality seeds, modern farming technology, and better market systems are necessary to permanently strengthen the agricultural sector.
Despite this, the current loan waiver scheme is being seen as a major relief for lakhs of farmers struggling with debt.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay also chaired a review meeting with officials regarding the Mekedatu Dam project in Karnataka. During the meeting, he directed officials to take quick legal and administrative steps to protect Tamil Nadu’s water rights.
The government stated that protecting the interests of farmers and ensuring water security for agriculture remain among its highest priorities.
