The Tamil Nadu Government has unveiled a farmer-focused Agriculture Budget for 2026-27, announcing several major initiatives to strengthen the state's agricultural sector. The budget focuses on providing financial relief to farmers, tackling climate-related challenges, reducing cultivation costs, and improving agricultural productivity.
Presenting the Agriculture Budget in the State Assembly, Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister R. Vinod said the government's priority is to ensure economic security for farmers facing rising cultivation costs, changing weather patterns, and the growing impact of climate change.
Among the biggest announcements is a ₹5,932 crore crop loan waiver that will benefit 14.43 lakh farmers across the state. The budget also includes significant allocations for tackling the possible impact of Super El Niño, promoting Kuruvai paddy cultivation, expanding crop insurance coverage, and supporting irrigation through electricity subsidies.
The Tamil Nadu Government has announced a crop loan waiver worth ₹5,932 crore, benefiting more than 14.43 lakh farmers. The decision has been taken to reduce the financial burden on small and marginal farmers who have been affected by climate change, natural disasters, and rising agricultural expenses.
According to the government, the loan waiver will improve farmers' credit history, making it easier for them to access fresh agricultural loans for upcoming crop seasons. The move is also expected to encourage greater investment in farming activities and improve overall agricultural growth.
The government has also created a ₹340 crore special contingency fund to deal with the possible impact of Super El Niño.
Weather forecasts indicate that 12 districts in Tamil Nadu could face severe effects due to the weather phenomenon. The allocated fund will be used for drought management, alternative crop planning, technical guidance for farmers, and other relief measures aimed at reducing crop losses and protecting agricultural production.
To support paddy cultivation in the Cauvery Delta region, the government has allocated ₹134 crore under the Kuruvai Package Scheme.
The scheme aims to encourage cultivation of the short-duration Kuruvai paddy crop by providing subsidies on essential agricultural inputs. This year, around 8.26 lakh acres have been brought under Kuruvai cultivation.
The government has also announced 100% crop insurance coverage for the entire Kuruvai cultivation area, ensuring farmers receive financial protection against natural calamities and weather-related crop losses.
The Agriculture Budget has earmarked ₹648 crore for implementing the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) across 38 notified districts in Tamil Nadu.
The allocation aims to expand crop insurance coverage, ensuring more farmers receive timely financial compensation in case of crop damage caused by natural disasters or adverse weather conditions.
To reduce irrigation costs, the government has made a significant investment in irrigation support.
Out of the total ₹14,984 crore allocated for various agricultural subsidy schemes, ₹7,432 crore has been earmarked for electric tube well irrigation subsidies. The subsidy will help farmers using groundwater for irrigation by lowering electricity expenses, ultimately reducing the overall cost of cultivation.
The Tamil Nadu Government said the Agriculture Budget 2026-27 is designed not only to provide financial assistance but also to build a more resilient agricultural sector capable of facing climate-related challenges.
Through measures such as the crop loan waiver, Super El Niño contingency fund, Kuruvai support package, expanded crop insurance, and irrigation subsidies, the government aims to improve farmers incomes, reduce production risks, and promote sustainable agricultural growth across the state.
