Key Highlights:
Škoda Auto Volkswagen India Private Limited (SAVWIPL) has reinforced its commitment to the Indian government's ‘Skill India’ initiative through its latest Student Car Project. This year, Mechatronics students developed a unique pickup truck by merging two Volkswagen models: the Taigun SUV and Virtus sedan.
Development Process and Innovation
The project was carried out in several stages over nine months, from concept finalisation to vehicle testing. Students conducted market research, worked on design, and used advanced manufacturing techniques like 3D printing to create parts for the vehicle.
The pickup truck was fitted with special features such as underbody protection, studded tyres, ambient lighting, and roof-mounted lights.
Professional Mentorship and Collaboration
Throughout the process, students were mentored by professionals from SAVWIPL, who provided guidance and enabled collaboration with industry experts and suppliers. This mentorship played a crucial role in transforming the students' ideas into a fully functional vehicle.
SAVWIPL’s Commitment to Youth Development
The Student Car Project is one of several initiatives by SAVWIPL to support youth skill development in India. The company’s Dual Vocational Training program in mechatronics, launched in 2011, has been instrumental in upskilling high school students.
The program is based on Germany’s vocational training system and aims to equip young talents with technological creativity, problem-solving skills, and industry knowledge.
Global Influence and Skill Development
Škoda also runs the Azubi Student Car Project globally under the Škoda Academy, which is aligned with the ‘Skill India’ initiative. This program provides students with hands-on experience in automotive manufacturing, helping them bridge the gap between theoretical learning and real-world application.
Leadership Perspective
Andreas Dick, Board Member for Production and Logistics at Škoda Auto, emphasized that the project showcases how young talent can apply advanced technology and innovation in vehicle creation. He highlighted that this aligns with efforts to position India as a global manufacturing hub.
Piyush Arora, Managing Director and CEO of Škoda Auto Volkswagen India, shared that the project nurtures local talent and aligns with India's development goals by fostering a culture of practical learning and global competitiveness.
