Sales of Electric Three Wheelers in January 2023

Sales of passenger electric three-wheelers increased by 74% in January 2023 compared to the same month in 2022.

In India, sales of electric Three Wheelers have reached new heights, with over 32,000 units sold in January 2023. This represents a significant increase in electric vehicle sales, which have yet to reach the same level of awareness. But still the Electric Three Wheelers (E3W) market saw mixed results, with sales of registered passenger E3Ws falling by 2% and sales of registered cargo-type E3Ws falling by 12%.

Despite these declines, overall sales of electric three-wheelers fell by around 3% month over month. However, when compared year over year, the picture improves significantly. Sales of passenger electric three-wheelers increased by 74% in January 2023 compared to the same month in 2022, while cargo-type E3W sales increased by 68%. Despite the recent sales decline, this suggests that the market for E3Ws is still expanding.

Electric Three Wheelers are quickly replacing traditional diesel/CNG-powered vehicles for transportation and delivery, providing significant cost savings and environmental benefits.

The factors contributing to the rise of electric Three Wheelers sales are:

• The government's push for green mobility.
• In addition, there is a growing concern about air pollution
• Availability of affordable electric vehicles.

As per the sources, Mahindra was the market leader with 8.61%, followed by YC Electric with 6.91%. Other brands in the top seven include Saera Electric Auto (5.05%), Dilli Electric (4.06%), Champion Poly Plast (3.40%), Mini Metro EV LLP (3.39%), and Piaggio (3.25%).

• Mahindra brand took the top spot in the sales rankings. In January 2023, the company sold 2,833 battery-powered Three Wheelers. Mahindra Electric provides a variety of electric vehicles, including battery-powered auto rickshaws, pickup trucks, and delivery and freight vehicles.

• The YC Electric Vehicle, also known as the Yatri EV, propelled him to second place in sales. In January, the company sold 2,275 E3Ws.

• Saera Electric, also known as Mayuri, is ranked third in terms of sales. In January, Mayuri sold 1,663 three-wheel battery-powered vehicles.

• Piaggio, a well-known auto-rickshaw manufacturer, also reported an increase in demand for battery-powered Three Wheelers. In January 2023, the company sold 1,069 electric vehicles.

According to the most recent figures, demand for E3Ws remains strong, particularly for passenger models. The increase in sales of passenger E3Ws reflects the growing popularity of these vehicles, which provide a more environmentally friendly and cost-effective alternative to traditional automobiles.

Cargo-type E3Ws, on the other hand, are proving popular among businesses looking for a cost-effective and environmentally friendly way to transport goods.

While the month-over-month drop in E3W sales is concerning, the overall trend is positive. The significant year-over-year increase in sales demonstrates that the E3W market is expanding and that both consumers and businesses are embracing this innovative mode of transportation.
