Agricultural experts from Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) and the Ferozepur Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) have warned that the virus-borne disease could lead to major yield losses if it is not identified and managed at an early stage.
Following field surveys in multiple villages, scientists have urged farmers to regularly inspect their crops and avoid spraying pesticides without expert guidance. Timely monitoring and scientific crop management can help reduce the spread of the disease and protect paddy production.
A team from the Ferozepur Krishi Vigyan Kendra, led by Deputy Director Dr. Gurmel Singh Sandhu, recently inspected paddy fields in several villages to assess the disease situation.

He also stressed that farmers should use insecticides or pesticides only after consulting agricultural experts or the Krishi Vigyan Kendra. Unnecessary spraying not only increases production costs but may also fail to control the disease effectively.
According to him, regular monitoring and scientific crop management can significantly reduce disease spread and help farmers avoid financial losses.
According to Dr. Harvinder Singh Buttar, Assistant Professor (Plant Protection), Rice Dwarf Disease is caused by a virus that affects the normal growth and development of paddy plants.
The disease weakens the crop and reduces grain production, leading to lower yields if left unmanaged.
Farmers should watch for the following symptoms:
Paddy plants remain much shorter than normal.
Leaves become thin and pointed.
Root growth becomes weak.
Panicles (ears) do not develop properly.
Grain formation is poor or absent in severe cases.
Infected plants may gradually dry up, causing significant yield loss.
Agricultural scientists have identified the White-backed Plant Hopper (WBPH) as the insect responsible for spreading Rice Dwarf Disease.
Since the virus spreads through this insect, controlling its population is essential for preventing further infection.
Experts explained that:
Nymphs (young insects) are light greyish-white in colour.
Adult insects have a distinctive white stripe on their back and black spots on the rear wings.
Early identification of the insect can help farmers take timely action before the disease spreads widely.
Scientists recommend a simple field inspection method:
Gently tilt the paddy plants.
Shake them two or three times.
Observe the water surface in the field.
If nymphs or adult White-backed Plant Hoppers float on the water, it indicates the presence of the pest.
However, insecticides should only be sprayed when the insect population reaches the economic threshold level and only according to recommendations from agricultural experts or the university.
Agricultural scientists have shared several practical measures to reduce the risk of Rice Dwarf Disease:
Inspect paddy fields regularly, preferably once every week.
Install light bulbs near fields at night to attract and monitor the insect population.
Remove infected plants immediately and bury them deeply to stop the virus from spreading.
Keep field bunds and irrigation channels free from weeds.
Pay special attention to fields where the disease appeared during the previous season.
Apply nitrogen fertilizers only in the recommended quantity, as excessive nitrogen encourages higher pest populations.
Spray insecticides only after expert advice and only when pest levels cross the recommended threshold.
Agricultural experts believe that regular field inspections, early removal of infected plants, and proper management of the White-backed Plant Hopper are the most effective ways to control Rice Dwarf Disease.
