Relief for Farmers: Haryana Starts Sunflower Procurement at MSP Ahead of Schedule, Telangana Also Announces Support

Key Highlights

  • Haryana started sunflower procurement from May 25

  • Procurement began one week earlier than planned

  • Sunflower will be purchased at MSP under PSS

  • Telangana announced MSP procurement for farmers

  • Sunflower MSP fixed at ₹7,721 per quintal

Sunflower farmers in Haryana and Telangana have received major relief as both state governments have decided to procure sunflower crops at the Minimum Support Price (MSP). These decisions are expected to protect farmers from low market prices and ensure better income during the current marketing season.

Haryana Begins Sunflower Procurement Early

In a major step for farmer welfare, the Haryana government has started sunflower procurement one week earlier than scheduled under the 2026-27 Rabi Marketing Season. Earlier, procurement was planned to begin from June 1, but it has now officially started from May 25.

The decision was taken after continuous demands from sunflower farmers across the state. Many farmers had already started harvesting their crops and were worried about delays in selling their produce in mandis.

Haryana Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Shyam Singh Rana said that the government advanced the procurement date after reviewing the crop condition and farmers concerns. He stated that sunflower crops are ready in several districts, and the early procurement process will help farmers avoid unnecessary problems in mandis.

Government Responds to Farmers Demand

According to the state government, farmers had repeatedly requested that sunflower procurement should begin without delay. Harvesting is progressing quickly in many regions despite changing weather conditions, and delaying procurement could have created difficulties for growers.

The government believes this decision will directly benefit sunflower farmers by allowing them to sell their crops on time at assured prices. Officials also stated that protecting farmers’ income remains a priority and procurement at MSP will help reduce financial pressure on growers.

Special Arrangements Made in Mandis

The Haryana government has instructed procurement agencies to make all necessary arrangements in mandis for smooth procurement operations.

Special focus is being given to:

  • Proper weighing of crops

  • Quick lifting of produce

  • Timely payment systems

  • Basic facilities for farmers in mandis

Additional staff members have also been deployed at procurement centers to ensure farmers do not face long waiting times during the selling process.

Sunflower Procurement at MSP Under PSS

Sunflower crops in Haryana will be purchased at the Minimum Support Price fixed by the central government under the Price Support Scheme (PSS).

The government stated that Haryana is currently the only state in the country that ensures procurement of all 24 centrally notified crops at MSP. This move is expected to protect farmers from selling their crops at lower market rates.

Procurement at MSP will help sunflower farmers receive fair prices for their produce and prevent losses caused by fluctuating market conditions.

Multiple Agencies Given Responsibility

To ensure smooth procurement and timely payments, the Haryana government has assigned responsibilities to several departments and agencies.

These include:

  • Food and Civil Supplies Department

  • Haryana State Agricultural Marketing Board (HSAMB)

  • Haryana Warehousing Corporation (HSWC)

  • HAFED

  • NAFED

  • NCCF

The government has directed all agencies to ensure there are no delays in procurement or payment. Monitoring is also being carried out at different levels to maintain transparency and efficiency.

Telangana Also Announces MSP Procurement

Farmers in Telangana have also received relief as the state government decided to procure sunflower crops at MSP after market prices dropped sharply below the support price.

Telangana Agriculture Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao said the state had sought financial assistance from the central government for procurement support. However, after not receiving a positive response, the Telangana government decided to procure sunflower crops on its own.

Huge Difference Between Market Price and MSP

At present, sunflower is being sold in Telangana markets at nearly ₹5,376 per quintal, while the MSP for sunflower has been fixed at ₹7,721 per quintal.

This large gap between market prices and MSP had increased farmers concerns. Procurement at MSP is expected to provide significant financial relief to sunflower growers in the state.

Positive Message for Sunflower Farmers

Experts believe the decisions taken by Haryana and Telangana will help reduce market uncertainty for sunflower farmers. Haryana’s move to start procurement early and Telangana’s decision to purchase at MSP are being seen as farmer-friendly measures.

These steps have also created a positive message for sunflower-producing farmers across the country, as state governments are taking active measures to protect farmers from price losses and ensure stable incomes.

The decisions taken by Haryana and Telangana governments have brought major relief to sunflower farmers ahead of the new marketing season. Early procurement in Haryana and MSP-based purchasing in Telangana will help farmers avoid losses caused by low market prices and delayed sales. These steps are expected to improve farmer confidence, ensure better income security, and strengthen support for sunflower cultivation. The initiatives also highlight the growing focus of state governments on protecting farmers interests.
