The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the extension of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme from 2026-27 to 2030-31. Along with the extension, the government has also approved a budget allocation of ₹3.15 lakh crore to continue the scheme over the next five years.

With this decision, eligible farmer families across the country will continue to receive ₹6,000 every year as direct financial assistance. The government said that strengthening farmers income remains a key priority, as "farmers prosperity is the foundation of the nation's prosperity."

PM Kisan Yojana to Continue Till 2030-31

The extension of the PM Kisan scheme ensures that eligible landholding farmer families will continue receiving annual financial assistance without interruption.

Under the scheme, each eligible farmer family receives ₹6,000 per year, which is transferred directly into their bank accounts through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system. The amount is paid in three equal installments of ₹2,000 each every year.

The government has allocated ₹3.15 lakh crore for the scheme's continuation, aiming to provide long-term financial support to farmers and strengthen the rural economy.

What is PM Kisan Yojana?

The Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme was launched in February 2019 to provide income support to eligible landholding farmer families.

Positive Impact Found in Independent Evaluation

The impact of the PM Kisan scheme has also been assessed by independent institutions.

According to a study by the Development Monitoring and Evaluation Office (DMEO) of NITI Aayog:

• More than 92% of beneficiaries used the financial assistance for agricultural activities and farm investments.

• Around 85% of farmers said the scheme improved their agricultural income and reduced dependence on informal credit sources.

The evaluation also reported improvements during the 2020-21 to 2025-26 period:

• 9.65% increase in cultivated agricultural area

• 10.53% growth in agricultural productivity

• 21.18% increase in total foodgrain production

These findings indicate that regular financial assistance has supported agricultural investment and improved farming outcomes.

Transparent Payments Through Digital System

One of the biggest strengths of the PM Kisan scheme is its fully digital payment system.

Using Aadhaar-based authentication, online beneficiary verification, and Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), the government transfers funds directly into farmers' bank accounts.
