The PM Electric Drive Revolution in Innovative Vehicle Enhancement (PM E-DRIVE) Scheme was approved at a Union Cabinet meeting led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw informed reporters.

Major Details of the PM E-Drive Scheme

The PM E-Drive Scheme, officially named the PM Electric Drive Revolution In Innovative Vehicle Enhancement (PM E-DRIVE), was announced during a Union Cabinet meeting. Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw shared that the initiative will support the following:

  • Electric Two-Wheelers: 24.79 lakh units will be funded.

  • Electric Buses: 14,028 e-buses will be funded..
  • Charging Infrastructure: 88,500 charging stations will be installed.

Subsidies and Funding for EVs

To promote the use of electric vehicles in India, the scheme offers subsidies and demand incentives worth Rs 3,679 crore. This will increase the adoption of various electric vehicles, including e-two-wheelers, e-three-wheelers, e-ambulances, and e-trucks.

E-Buses and E-Ambulances

A significant part of the budget, Rs 4,391 crore, is allocated for state transport companies to purchase 14,028 e-buses. Another Rs 500 crore is dedicated to building an e-ambulance fleet for efficient patient transport.

Focus on Electric Trucks

The scheme also encourages the use of electric trucks in India by setting aside Rs 500 crore for their promotion.

CMV360 Says

The PM E-Drive Scheme is expected to have a practical impact on India's electric vehicle industry. Increasing the number of electric two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and buses can help reduce pollution in urban areas and lower the country's dependence on fossil fuels.

However, the real challenge lies in creating enough charging infrastructure and ensuring the timely delivery of these vehicles. For the scheme to succeed, the government must ensure proper implementation and support for the new electric transport systems across all regions.
