Farmers across the country can now register for the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) for the Kharif 2026 season. The registration process began on July 12, 2026, and eligible farmers can insure their notified crops until July 31, 2026.

The Agriculture Department has advised farmers not to wait until the last date and to complete their registration early so they can receive financial support if their crops are damaged due to natural disasters or adverse weather conditions.

Crop Insurance Becomes More Important Amid Weather Uncertainty

Crop insurance is especially important this Kharif season as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted below-normal or irregular rainfall in several parts of Chhattisgarh due to the impact of El Niño. Such weather conditions increase the risk of crop losses, making insurance an important financial safety net for farmers growing Kharif crops.

The Agriculture Department has urged farmers to take advantage of the scheme and secure their crops before the registration deadline.

Farmers Can Insure These 11 Kharif Crops

Under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana, farmers can insure 11 notified Kharif crops. These include:

  • Paddy (Irrigated)

  • Paddy (Non-Irrigated)

  • Maize

  • Soybean

  • Pigeon Pea (Arhar/Tur)

  • Groundnut

  • Green Gram (Moong)

  • Black Gram (Urad)

  • Kodo Millet

  • Kutki Millet

  • Ragi

Farmers can contact their local Rural Agricultural Extension Officer to confirm the list of notified crops applicable in their village.

Who Can Apply and Where to Register

Both loanee and non-loanee farmers are eligible to apply under the scheme.

  • Farmers who have taken agricultural loans can register through their respective bank or financial institution.

  • Non-loanee farmers can apply through their nearest bank, Common Service Centre (CSC), authorised insurance agent, or the Agriculture Department.

  • Farmers can also complete the registration online through the official PMFBY portal at pmfby.gov.in.

What Risks Are Covered Under PM Fasal Bima Yojana?

The Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana provides insurance protection against crop losses at different stages of the crop cycle.

The scheme covers:

  • Prevented sowing, when farmers are unable to sow crops due to adverse weather conditions.

  • Planting or early crop failure after sowing.

  • Localized natural calamities, including hailstorm, cloudburst, waterlogging and landslides.

  • Post-harvest losses, where harvested produce kept in the field is damaged due to cyclones or unseasonal rainfall.

This broad coverage helps farmers reduce financial losses caused by unpredictable weather and natural disasters.

How to Report Crop Damage

If crops are damaged due to floods, excessive rainfall, hailstorms or any other natural calamity, farmers must report the loss within 72 hours to ensure their insurance claim is processed.

Crop damage can be reported through:

  • The concerned Agriculture Department

  • Insurance company

  • Bank or financial institution

  • Revenue Department

  • Written application to the concerned authorities

Farmers can also seek assistance or register complaints through the Government of India's toll-free helpline number 14447.

Agriculture Department Urges Early Registration

The Agriculture Department has appealed to farmers to complete their crop insurance registration well before July 31, 2026, instead of waiting until the final day.

With increasing uncertainty due to drought, low rainfall, floods, hailstorms, waterlogging and other weather-related events, the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana offers an important financial safeguard. Timely enrolment will ensure eligible farmers can receive compensation if their crops suffer losses during the Kharif 2026 season.
