Key Highlights

  • Pantnagar University develops three new hybrid fodder maize varieties.

  • Varieties include Pant Hybrid Fodder Maize-1, 2 and 3.

  • First two varieties released and notified in the Indian Government Gazette.

  • Developed using genetic traits of wild maize and teosinte.

  • Hybrid seed production and commercialisation work is underway.

Scientists at Govind Ballabh Pant University of Agriculture and Technology (GBPUAT), Pantnagar, have developed three new hybrid fodder maize varieties that could help livestock farmers improve green fodder production and reduce feeding costs. Developed using the genetic traits of wild maize and teosinte, these varieties are designed to provide higher fodder yields, remain green for longer and offer better nutritional value for livestock.

The three newly developed varieties are Pant Hybrid Fodder Maize-1, Pant Hybrid Fodder Maize-2 and Pant Hybrid Fodder Maize-3. This development is expected to create new opportunities for farmers engaged in dairy farming and animal husbandry by improving access to quality green fodder.

Green fodder plays an important role in maintaining livestock health, supporting milk production and improving overall animal productivity. However, ensuring a regular supply of nutritious fodder can be challenging for livestock farmers. The new varieties aim to address this requirement by offering improved options for fodder cultivation.

Three New Hybrid Fodder Maize Varieties Developed by Pantnagar University

The scientists at Pantnagar University have developed three advanced hybrid varieties specifically for fodder production:

  • Pant Hybrid Fodder Maize-2

  • Pant Hybrid Fodder Maize-3

Among these, Pant Hybrid Fodder Maize-1 and Pant Hybrid Fodder Maize-2 have already been released and notified in the Indian Government Gazette. The notification process for Pant Hybrid Fodder Maize-3 is currently underway.

The development of all three varieties represents an important step towards providing farmers with additional choices for producing quality green fodder. Their improved characteristics are expected to support higher fodder production and help livestock owners manage their animals' nutritional requirements more effectively.

Developed Using Genetic Traits of Wild Maize and Teosinte

One of the important aspects of these new fodder maize varieties is the use of genetic characteristics from wild maize and teosinte.

Teosinte is a wild relative of maize and is widely used in crop improvement research because of its valuable genetic traits. By using these genetic properties, university scientists have worked towards developing improved fodder maize varieties with better production potential and desirable characteristics.

The research focused on developing maize varieties that could produce higher quantities of green fodder, retain their greenery for a longer period and provide better nutrition to livestock.

These characteristics could make the varieties useful for farmers looking for reliable fodder production options. However, their actual performance will depend on factors such as local weather conditions, soil quality, cultivation practices and farm management.

University Working on Hybrid Seed Production Technology

After developing the three varieties, scientists are now focusing on developing suitable hybrid seed production technology.

The university is also working towards transferring the developed technologies to farmers and commercialising the associated seed production techniques. This is an important step because the availability of quality seeds will determine how easily farmers can adopt these varieties on their fields.

Successful development and commercialisation of hybrid seed production technology could help ensure a wider supply of seeds. It would also make it easier to transfer the benefits of university research from experimental fields to actual farming conditions.

Once the seeds become accessible, livestock farmers can consider cultivating these varieties according to their fodder requirements, local growing conditions and available agricultural resources.

Vice Chancellor Inspects Maize Research and Seed Production Field

The progress of this research was also reviewed by university Vice Chancellor Dr. Shivendra Kumar Kashyap during his visit to the maize breeding and seed production experimental field at the Crop Research Center.

During the inspection, he interacted with scientists and gathered information about the three newly developed fodder maize varieties and the progress made in the research.

He also discussed the development of hybrid seed production technology and the possibilities of commercialising these varieties to make them accessible to farmers.

Dr. Kashyap appreciated the efforts of the research team and provided necessary guidance to further advance the research activities. He also emphasised the importance of taking the developed varieties and related technologies to as many farmers as possible so that they can benefit from the university's research.

How Can These New Fodder Maize Varieties Benefit Livestock Farmers?

The availability of nutritious green fodder is essential for maintaining healthy livestock and supporting better animal productivity. For dairy farmers, maintaining a consistent supply of quality fodder can also play an important role in managing overall feeding expenses.

The three new Pant Hybrid Fodder Maize varieties could offer several potential benefits:

  • Higher fodder production: Improved varieties are being developed to provide higher green fodder yields.

  • Longer-lasting greenery: Their ability to remain green for longer could help farmers obtain suitable green fodder for livestock.

  • Better nutritional value: The varieties have been developed with the aim of providing more nutritious fodder for animals.

  • Potential reduction in feeding costs: Growing quality fodder on farms could help livestock owners manage their dependence on other fodder sources.

  • More cultivation options: Three different hybrid varieties could provide farmers with additional choices based on their regional conditions and requirements.

However, farmers will need access to quality seeds and proper cultivation guidance to achieve the expected benefits. The suitability of these varieties will also depend on local soil, climate and agricultural management practices.

CMV360 Says

The development of Pant Hybrid Fodder Maize-1, 2 and 3 by Pantnagar University could strengthen India's green fodder production and animal husbandry sector. With two varieties already notified and the third undergoing notification, the next focus is hybrid seed production and commercialisation. If these efforts succeed, livestock farmers could gain access to higher-yielding, nutritious fodder options, potentially improving livestock feeding practices and reducing fodder expenses.
