Farmers can earn up to ₹10 lakh annually from just one acre of land by adopting modern agricultural practices, crop diversification, natural farming and advanced seed technology. Instead of depending entirely on traditional farming methods or growing a single crop, farmers can increase their income by planning cultivation according to market demand and making better use of available resources.
Agricultural experts shared this approach during a seminar organised on the occasion of Madhya Pradesh Foundation Day. The seminar focused on ways to increase farmers' income, reduce cultivation costs, improve crop quality and help farmers receive better prices for their produce.
Experts highlighted that multi-cropping, horticulture, value addition, natural farming and quality seed selection can play an important role in making small-scale farming more profitable. According to them, a combination of these practices can help farmers generate income throughout the year rather than depending on a single harvest.
Multi-Cropping Can Help Farmers Earn More from One Acre
Multi-cropping was identified as one of the most effective ways to improve agricultural income from limited land. Under this approach, farmers grow different crops together or cultivate multiple crops at different times of the year on the same piece of land.
Farmers can combine vegetables, medicinal plants and other suitable crops through intercropping and crop diversification. This allows them to use available farmland more efficiently and generate income from different crops at different times.
Another major advantage of multi-cropping is that it reduces dependence on a single crop. If one crop does not perform well because of weather conditions or market fluctuations, other crops can help reduce the financial impact.
Experts also explained that crop diversification can support soil fertility and improve overall farm health when suitable crops and cultivation practices are selected.
Processing and Branding Can Increase Farmers Income
Experts also highlighted the importance of value addition in agriculture. They explained that farmers should not always sell their horticultural produce and agricultural products in their raw form.
Instead, processing, attractive packaging and proper branding can increase the market value of agricultural products. By converting raw produce into finished or processed products, farmers can earn additional income and access better market opportunities.
This approach allows farmers to benefit from more than just crop production. It also creates opportunities to build their own agricultural brands and reach consumers directly.
Farmers in northeastern states are already adopting this model successfully, demonstrating how processing and branding can help improve agricultural earnings.
Natural Farming and Organic Farming: Understanding the Difference
A.S. Rajput, Regional Director of the Regional Centre for Organic Farming, Nagpur, explained the fundamental differences between natural farming and organic farming during the seminar.
According to him, natural farming focuses on reducing dependence on artificial inputs purchased from the market. Instead, it encourages farmers to use locally available natural resources that support soil health, water conservation, the environment and beneficial living organisms on farms.
The practice avoids artificial chemical fertilisers and pesticides and promotes natural alternatives such as Jeevamrit and Neemastra, which are prepared using cow dung and cow urine.
Multi-cropping and proper soil health management are also important parts of this farming approach. The primary objective is to reduce dependence on external agricultural inputs while conserving natural resources and maintaining long-term farm productivity.
Natural Farming Certification Can Improve Market Recognition
Rajput also highlighted the importance of certification for natural and organic agricultural products. He explained that certification helps establish the credibility of products and makes it easier for consumers to identify genuine produce.
It can also help farmers build trust in the market and receive fair prices for their products.
He explained two major certification mechanisms available at the central government level:
Third-Party Certification: This certification system operates through APEDA and 36 organisations under the Union Ministry of Commerce.
Participatory Guarantee System (PGS): This is a farmer-centric, trust-based certification mechanism that encourages participation and collective assurance among farmers.
These certification systems can help farmers establish the identity of their products and improve their market opportunities.
Quality Seeds and Seed Testing Are Essential for Better Production
Dr. Vinod Kumar, Professor at the Agricultural College, Powarkheda, Narmadapuram, explained the importance of seed technology and quality seeds in improving agricultural production.
He informed farmers about different types of seeds, methods of identifying seed quality and the process of seed testing.
According to him, testing seeds before sowing is essential to understand their quality and make informed decisions. It helps farmers assess seed suitability and improve the chances of proper germination and better crop production.
Farmers were also made aware of the importance of following prescribed seed-testing procedures before using seeds for cultivation.
E-Development System to Improve Fertiliser Distribution
Deputy Director of Agriculture Ashutosh Pandey discussed the fertiliser distribution system and the e-development initiative.
He explained that the system is helping reduce the difficulties farmers face while purchasing fertilisers, particularly the problem of standing in long queues.
It is also supporting timely fertiliser availability according to agricultural requirements. The digital system aims to make distribution more transparent and help control the black marketing of fertilisers.
This can make it easier for farmers to access essential agricultural inputs while improving the overall distribution process.
