The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) has been a major support system for rural communities. One of the key benefits under this scheme is the construction of wells, which helps farmers with year-round irrigation, leading to increased crop yields and better livelihoods.

Under MGNREGA, wells can be constructed on private land to provide irrigation facilities, particularly for farmers belonging to weaker sections. The eligible beneficiaries include:
Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST)
Nomadic Tribes
Below Poverty Line (BPL) families
Female-headed households
Physically challenged individuals
Land reform beneficiaries
Forest rights leaseholders
Indira Awas Yojana beneficiaries
Small and marginal farmers
This initiative ensures that farmers with unirrigated land can get access to water, allowing them to cultivate multiple crops throughout the year.
The construction of wells under MNREGA is significantly improving farmer's economic conditions. During summer, when water scarcity becomes a major issue, these wells provide a consistent water source for irrigation. Additionally, MNREGA facilitates the construction of cattle sheds and ponds, further enhancing rural livelihoods.
Farmer Rammilan from Gram Panchayat Mangari, Batouli block, Ambikapur district, Chhattisgarh, benefited from this scheme by constructing a well on his land. Earlier, his 4-acre land lacked irrigation, limiting his crop production. After receiving approval for Rs 2.99 lakh under MNREGA, he completed the well construction. Now, he can grow wheat, potatoes, pigeon peas, corn, and vegetables throughout the year, significantly improving his income. Water is readily available for both irrigation and daily needs, reducing his dependency on external sources.
Farmers can apply for well construction and other infrastructure projects under MNREGA through their Gram Panchayat. After approval by the Gram Sabha, the work begins. Those interested can also visit the government’s official website:MNREGA Dashboard, for more details.
With summer approaching, farmers are encouraged to take advantage of this scheme to ensure adequate water supply for their fields and boost their agricultural productivity.
